I am somewhat new to making hay and am going to an auction listing a NH 67 and NH 68 baler. What do I need to look at to find out the condition these balers are in and what they are worth. And whether they would be usable?? They also list a side delivery rake, what do I look for on it. I figured I go straight to the experts and ask you guys.

Thanx,

Jerry in Pa

I've got a Super 68 which is very similar to the NH 68. Don't know about the NH67.

I'd check the tieing mechanism out. Look to see if it appears to have been greased on a regular basis. Inspect the "duck bills" (the little "L" shaped jobbies that grab the twine and tie it). They should have a very polished look, but shouldn't have grooves worn in them. They are readily replaced, but cashy ( almost $60 a pop). Check the tongue for straightness. Make sure all the visible cogs have roller chain on them (some of the cogs have covers and aren't visible without partial dismantling). Check for broken pick-up teeth. Check the edge on the twine cutters. Mine wouldn't cut the first time I had it out. Used a die grinder with high speed carbide on the cutters and they worked great---dull knifes are a misery.

A decent Super 68 or just 68 might go for $600-900 here in Western Illinois. I paid about $800 and I'm satisfied. I've heard of others that work well for as little as $400-500.

Parts are still available, but expensive (depending on the part). Once you get the thing tuned up, DON'T leave it outside. The knotter mechanism does much better out of the weather.

Good luck.

Well, picked up the Super 68 for $250 bucks. All the old farmers at the auction said I got a steal. I'm picking her up today so we'll rip her apart soon and see how she looks.

BTW, where can I get an operators/service manual for the NH Super 68 baler???

Thx
