I am thinking about possibly trading my L3450 Kubota up to a M4900 DT (4wd) tractor with 45 hp in order to do some small scale haying, etc. The tractor weighs about 4500 lbs with front weights.
Will this be enough power to run an NH 273 or similar pto baler? Also, what size mower or haybine could I run economically?

Thanks, Kenneth

I have a Ford 3000 gas tractor and I use a 273 Hayliner behind it with no problems, never misses a knot! I have only flat land that I bale. I use a NH 488 mower conditioner also without a problem behind the 3000.

I use the 273. But currently have been using an over powered tractor with this baler. 120 HP, but I agree, that the 273 is a fine baler.

I've bailed thousands of bales with a NH 273 and a Ford 3000 gas. Also, cut with a 9' haybine. Only had a problem once on a steep incline with a full load of hay behind. The 5300 # of Ford was not enough and she just about got away on us.
The 273 was one of the finest built in my estimation.
45 HP should be ample plus.

You should have lots of power with 45 hp. I do all the work with a 35 Fergie (32hp) and it runs a PT10 and NH 269 no problem. Just have to know the limitations of older, smaller stuff is all. Good luck

I wanted to change the name of my post to the name above, but I guess I submitted and then stopped the browser, creating the double post.
