I have a 2-row covington planter and need to know what seed plates to use with different seeds.I know each plate has a number on it but need to know what seed it is for.I also need to know what the different gears are used for in the amount of fertilizer used.

I've got an old Covington that I paid $75 for then replaced the presser wheel axle and bearings on. It still works like a charm.

There are three sprokets on there you can trade around if I'm not going senile. Mine has a 6 driving a 12 with the 10 on the cotton seed box.

I've got an original manual I'm looking at right now.

According to this, a 6X12 setup, with the front number being the number of teeth on the sprocket and the first number being the drive sprocket, will give you 20 inch spacing with the 8 hole "corn plate". With the 16 hole hole "peanut plate", it says it will give you 10 inch spacing.

A 12 driving a 6 with an 8 hole plate gives you 5 inch spacing.

A 6 driving a 12 with a 16 hole plate gives you 10 inch spacing for corn.

I've got a couple of acres of corn to plant and I'm going to use the last one. I'll just fertilize it pretty good and pack it in there since it's just for the deer anyway.

These plates I have are the old original covington plates. They will pick up 2 seed every now and then.

Like the other fellow says, the trick is to get the right size plate and number of teeth on it combined with the proper sprokets.

These instructions give you 13 different spacings for an 8 hole plate if you have 4 sprokets to play with.

What amazes me is the farmers around here. I actually took a tape into a 200 acre field of corn the other day. The rows were spaced at 24 inches and the plant spacing was 6 inches. The field next to it had 24 inch rows and the plants were 10 inches apart but belonged to another farmer.

The seed bags tell you which number plate to use to plant the seed contained in the bag.
