we have used a farmhand wheel rake for years and it is shot. Plus it picks up a lot of dirt and trash in the hay. i guess we would like to get a new(er)rake for the farm. we bale about 100 acres a year. where do i start. what would you buy, they are quite expensive and there is little profit in hay. whats the difference between a NH 55, 56, 256. i know the 258's are wider. i cut with a 9 foot haybine. also is a New Idea, massy or JD any good?

The 55 had a straight axle and the 56 had the axle tucked in close with the u-joints which is nicer on rough ground. The 256 is a newer 256 but I am not sure what has been changed. They look identical. I have used a 56 quite a bit and I like it a lot. I also have a John Deere 640 which I like a lot too. Around me (s.e. PA) the John Deere's are a little cheaper. It is a little lighter built but that hasn't been a problem yet. Both work well and are easy to get parts for. I think that you will be better off with a NH or JD then an older hayrake. The new gyro rakes from Kuhn are real nice but pricey. Hope this helps.

The NH 56 is a really good rake. My dad baught the 56 i have in 1962. It always worked good. The NH 55 is ok but it don't have offset wheels.
A John Deere is a good rake if it has 5 tine bars. I don't think much of New Idea rakes. Make sure you buy a rake with offset wheels and 5 tine bars.
