We're about to jump off the edge and get a used 4X4 round baler. Will be pulling it on level land most of the time. Baling Orchard grass & Red Clover. Will us a Kubota 38 hp. 4X4 tractor. Any suggestions would be listened to.

Are you talking 38 engine HP, or 38 PTO HP??? Compact tractors are usually listed by engine power, instead of like "real" tractors, that are rated at the PTO. Kubota up untill recently been been a worst offender for doing this. Robert

While I do agree with the other postings that balers are a great matter of personal opinion this doesn't help you make a decision. The "new" New Holland belt balers should be very satisfactory. The 630 makes a 4x4 and rates for as little as 35 hp. You can also get these very economically in this market as most people have moved up to a larger baler. The 640 offers a 4(wide)x up to 5 and the 650 offers a 4 wide up to 6 high. The good thing about one of these is that if you decide to move up in size (tractor) in a few years you can move up in roll size by simply loosening one bolt.

Email if you need more info.

Appreciate the information. I'll start looking around some for one. Like that 4X5 idea. Have a 52 hp.(pto) tractor now but needs some work.

you are going to run a round baler with a 38 hp tractor? good luck. you might want to reconsider and get a larger tractor (at least 45-50 pto hp) or maybe go to a square baler. that little tractor is going to be working awful hard.

I dont think u will have any problem with a 38 hp, course if the tractor is junk, then it will not pull much anything like its supposed to, i have a massey 231 38 hp on the pto, that i bought new about 2 years ago, and i pull the a 4x5 vermeer rebel round baler, with no problem. The tractor doesnt work or pull hard or anything with the baler. Its not always the equipment that works a tractor its a matter of whether a tractor is in good enough shape to pull the baler like its supposed to.

my two cents,

That would be like asking whats the best tractor. You will get as many answers as there are brands. It would be best to find a dealer near you that you like and trust that has good service, parts and sales people. Service and parts avalibility are more important than any brand in my opinion. Around here Deere,Heston and Vermeer are the three most popular. Hope this helps.
