A friend spoke fondly of a IH corn binder he used to operate while farming. I would like to find one at a farm auction for a restoration project. Can anyone tell me what I should know about one? How large a piece of machinery is it? What sized tractor is require to operate? What price range can I expect? How difficult are they to restore? I have already checked out the archives and read past postings. It's nice to know manuals are still available. Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

I think it definitely depends on the part of the country you look. I've seen them around western NY for almost no money. I have a ground driven machine and I get it out and cut sweet corn stalks every year. They're pretty need machines. I've also got an ensilage cutter I use after I cut the stalks.

I live in west central Wisconsin and I see the PTO driven ones sell once in awhile. I sold a good one several years ago for $50. I've seen some that they could not sell, so they were hauled for scrap. krum

Good luck finding a restorable corn binder. I have been looking for one for a while, I dont know about around where you are but here in northern virginia they are rare. they are not that large, mainly tall, you dont need that big of a tractor, you just need one big enough to pull it, it is ground driven. the only ones i have seen that are decient condition are expensive, mabee 1500 or so. the main problem you will run into when restoring it is finding parts, they are just as rare as the binders themselves. hope this helps.
