I saw JD 494A planter for $250. It is one owner and it has always been shedded. I have about 60 acres to plant. Two questions. Does the ground have to be worked up real well to use this type of planter? Can you use it plant a wide variety of seeds (corn, oats, mile, beans, wheat)? It comes with the original plates. Also, any other information about this planter would be helpful. Thanks,

494A planters need loose, well worked soil to plant best. They don't have heavy down pressure springs on them like the modern day planters do.

They will plant any type of row crop. Different plates are needed for different crops and seed size. Any seed dealer should be able to set you up with loaner plates, when your done planting just take them back to him.

Small grain like oats, wheat, and barley are sowed with a grain drill.

Thanks for the information.

What about an older AC air planter? Are these better or worse than JD 494A?

I don't know much about an AC air planter, but if you are just planting a few acres, the 494A will be much more reliable. Most air planters have monitors on them. They are expensive. You can buy a 494 cheaper than what a new monitor would cost. I don't know if Allis had them on their planters. The more stuff on the planter the more likely something will go down.

Around here a 400 Cyclo will sell from $100-$350. Just because the monitors go bad and it cost at least $300 for a new one.
