Can anyone tell me good or bad points of this baler? what years it was made?? Mine is a twine tie w/ a hydraulic tensioner. Any ideas of what it's worth? The body is a little rusty but the baler only has about 15,000 bales through it since it was purchased. (the sprockets and chains still have the original paint on them)

This was a good baler, made about '74-'80. The
appearance of the sheet metal and gear speeds,
made for the first of the 'newer style'. The
previous 282 was based on proven parts, and was a very dependable model. The changed 283 had some gear problems, upgrades were carried to the
420, which replaced it in about '80, but looks
identical. In '83 a new 420 w/hyd. tension cost
9,200. outright. This baler, in good condition,
sold at farm auction last spring, for 2,400.
The demand for these 16x18 balers is hurt by the
need of labor to handle bales, or pricey auto-
bale loader wagon/trucks. N-H now offers one
16x18 baler, #580, I believe. Location is a big
issue, but figure about 2K anyway. Good luck.

The 283 is a very good baler. It made the larger of the 2 tie bales, 16x18 instead of 14x16. It was of the series when NW speeded up the balers, plunger and all worked faster, think around 100 strokes per minute or there abouts. Worked good but hard on PTO shafts when they first came out. Most of the guys who write into the forum use the smaller balers it seems, many with throwers. The 283 is not one of those. In my part of the country most of the guys have gone to 3 tie bales now. The 283's big brothers were the 285 and 286. They were even higher capacity balers but the 283 would hold it's own. Not sure of price, have seen them advertised for $1000 here but also up to $2500 so depends on the part of the country and how good it is and how bad someone wants it.

I picked up the baler at auction (In Colo) for $1675. As I said earlier, the baler is rusty but has very few bales that have ever gone through it. Thanks for the info.
