Darren, There are seed tubes with valves in them below the plates that need to be opened. Thats what the wire did with the buttons and made the clicking sound. And then the seed would be dropped in hills. Those seed valves need to be opened to let the seed fall. It's been a long time but I think that in the center of the planter you will find a foot pedal with a S shaped arm on it. With this arm hooked to the rockshaft, push down on the pedal to over center and that should hold the seed valves open.

My Dad would pull the planter across the farm yard where the ground was hard and the corn would lay on top of the ground where he could see how far the space was and how many kernels to the hill.

Jack up your planter and set the frame up on blocks. put some seed in, and set a cofee can under the openers. Turn the wheels. If corn drops out, everything is good. if not, you probably have the wrong plate. You can figure out what the outside measurement of your wheel is and figure out what your seed spacing would be, too.

You need to have seed plates that fit the size of the kernal of corn. The corn is graded and has the information on a tag or on the bag to tell you what number plate fits that corn. Also there are lots of different setting that control how fast the plate turns in relation to the ground, this is how you control the population of the seed. Pretty simple with just a couple of things that need to be checked and set as needed
