I've seen some posts from Texas about sprigging. What is that? They apparently do it in Texas about this time of year, and I'd like to know if it's legal in Minnesota- sounds like fun!!

Howdy neighbour, we northern boys are lucky enough to grow darn good pasture from seed, we get the rain that our Texas cousins only dream of. I have friend in Midland, Texas who was just drooling when he saw the kind of grazing pasture and alfalfa hay we can get here in Manitoba. and sounds to me like seeding is cheaper too.

JMS/MN, Here in Texas our grass hay of choice is
Coastal Bermuda, This grass is propigated by
digging sprigs ( runners, rhizomes, Roots) These
can be dug and gathered many ways! ex. Chisel,
rake then bale . A sprigger is a 2 row planter that opens, feeds out these root sprigs covers and packs the row.
A field is preped the same way as if one was going
to plant , say wheat or oats.
Here in central Texas the norm planting rate is min 20 bu to 40 bu / acre.
Some custom boys are charging $50.00 / acre to
100/ acre depending on whether useing commom Coastal or Tiffton 85-pretty pricey!
Oh by the way if you opt to double plant ( in the middles ) The above figures double
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I heard about coastal bermuda from an army buddy many years ago during the Green Beret training, but we went separate ways then. He talked about starting a dairy herd in Texas after he got out. Seemed like it was almost a year-round forage source in the SE part of the state. Couldn't relate to that here, since our two seasons are winter and road construction! Would sure like to see some pix of sprigging equipment- I don't understand the relationship between a 'two row planter' and seeding 20-40 bushels per acre. You talk about rhizomes and runners- reminds me of quackgrass, which we try to kill on the sandy ground, and don't see on the clay soils.
