K,
I grew up using one we purchased new around 1966. We used it to do the mowing for about 10000 to 15000 small bales a year. It was great as long as you were mounting it on a Ford or Massey tractor. We replaced it in 78 with a New Holland. It did a fine job, but ours was a 6 foot mower and we needed a longer bar. We also replaced our Ford 4000 with a MF 275 and it would not fit our other tractors. We kept ours shedded and maintained and only had to replace one pittman and one belt in 12 years of serious use. Make sure the trip mechanism will trip. The trip would stick on a lot of the mowers that were not shedded. I have seen a lot that have been welded back together because they did not trip. If you go back to the Implement forum page and type in Ford 501 mower in the search box you can veiw many post from the last few years. Most people never take advantage of this feature.

I like mine, though it took me awhile to learn to mount it, then learn to use it. Getting ground speed vs type of grass to cut right was a chore.

Most of the common parts are still available from Ford-New Holland dealer at reasonable prices; the uncommon parts are still available at unreasonable prices :-)

Pick up a reprint of the owners manual from FNH publications at 800-635-4913...think mine was about 7 bucks.

think they were made in the early '60s.

Tom
