Well this summer we may take the plunge on 10 acres of land here in Pa. The rear 8 acres or so is an overgrown field...mostly overgrown with small trees/brush up to 1" diameter. Its pretty thick in some spots. I want to eventually farm this (hay/corn/wheat...who knows?) What can I do to get this back in shape? Will a brush hog or sickle mower handle it? Should I then plow under the stubble/trash? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would give the goat idea some real thought. They can be put in small areas with electric net fencing until the area is cleaned up then move them. They only need a little grain to keep them healthy. Good Luck

Fence in the whole place buy 10 or 15 goats and let them do all the work, they will clear and fertalize it all at the same time, you will be amazed at how quick they will clear that much ground then when it's all done you can sell the goats and be ahead of the game.
Ps. I can sell ya the goats.

Looks like it should be ok to brush hog. I'm in NW PA and really don't want to rent the land out...I have a Farmall H that my grandfather is giving me with some implements, so I will be doing this myself. I may need to buy a brush hog, but we'll see. I agree the sooner I clear it the better, since a lot of this brush is almost 6' high already!

You could use a brush hog and then plow the land, you may need a breaker plow depending on the size of the stumps. You could also try to locate a crusher or mulcher, these machines are used for mulching slash and preparing land for tree planting and are great for clearing land but the down side is they are expensive and need lots of horsepower and a slow moving tractor. You could also rent a bulldozer with a brush blade or get a Brush Brute or rock picker but these machines work best when the ground is wet. You will then have to burn the brush piles. I have even seen people using disks or harrows for clearing brush.

If you have the land now I would put a flyer at the local mill advertising land for rent. Depending on what kind of shape it is in someone might be willing to brush hog it and rent it. If it is really overgrown they might be willing to brush hog it in exchange for free rent and then rent it next year. Where are you located in PA? I'm in SE PA and rental ground gets picked up quick.

We had an irrigated pasture that we wanted to go to alfalfa. It had up to 2" tree's and we plowed them down. There were a few bigger trees and we pulled ahead of the plow. We had some kids picking up and piling the trees after they are plowed out.

Good advice. brush hog it. then I would recommend you hire an Ag service that will spray it with a brush/weed killer. All spray services know what chemicals to use and the safety precautions. Then check with your local Ag dealer and see if you can get a local farmer to notill corn in it for two or three years. Then plow (small stumps and trash will be decomposed)
you can work field as necessary for what ever crop you want to grow. My advice do not wait. Have it brush hoged now the brush gets bigger and harder to get rid of the longer you wait

When I bought my land 6 yrs ago I bought a 5' King Kutter brush hog/rock finder 'cause it was the cheapest I cound find new. Looked at a lot of used ones but not knowing how much abuse they had taken made me nervous. I mowed trees up to 1 1/2" just fine. The first time I mowed I set the mower high so I could see if there were any big rocks or stumps ( there were, and there always will be!!) Now that I have all the brush mowed I only use the mower 2-3 times a year so I'm glad I did'nt put a lot of money in it. I used a Farmall H to run it. Just go slow and mow half a mower width at a time if its real thick or you suspect there may be hidden obstacles. Keep a couple of extra shear pins/bolts handy.

considering that you used "may" and "who knows" then what I would suggest is to assist mother nature in preparing the field. First I would hire someone to bush hog the field at least 3 times this year. The reason I say hire is because the second and third are going to be the roughest as there will be all kinds of stumps stubble and the like to work on tires and sheer pins.By this time next year you will be getting an idea as to the type of grasses that are growing and the frequent cutting will be eliminating the brush and new tree sprouts and the stumps will be getting less troublsome. Also at this time I would check the soil for need of fertalizer and lime.By the third year you should be in good shape to decide what you want to use the acerage for.
