Help! I am looking for info / pictures of something called a "whirlwind plow." It was apparently an attachment used to build terraces.
What little info I have refers to it being used in the late 1930's to terrace fields in eastern Nebraska. "Whirlwind" may have been a brand name, or a local nickname, so if you know it by something else, please send what you know. I'm not looking to buy, just historic info.

Thanks!

Still use 2 of these whirlwinds on our farms in Central Texas. Dick has the particulars of the machine correct but the auger has a three speed transmission on it. To build or rebuild terraces it takes two passes in first gear, three passes in second gear, and then finally two passes in third gear. Attached to a tractor with more than 70 hp, the terracer will sling dirt more than 4 foot high and out about 10 feet in third gear.

I have seen some old ones for sale, know of one in a collection that is in really good orginal shape, and thought I had a picture of one in a book (can't find it now). The ones I've seen appeared to be built on a standard plow frame with one bottom moldboard mounted ahead of a vertical auger with about 8" flighting. The auger was even with the bottom of the plow share and was about 2-3' tall. It was powered by a PTO driven gear box. The plowshare cut/lifted/delivered the soil to the relatively highspeed auger that tossed the soil into a uniform ridge to the side of the plow. One pass each way and you had a "farm-over" terrace.
