I have aquired an old wooden Horse drawn manure spreader that is in good shape but is also in need of the "DOGS" in both wheels. Can anyone tell me where I can get them?

Thanks!

Dick,

I went by the buggy shop today and they do carry the dogs and the springs for the New Idea spreaders. The dogs are $4.75 each and the springs are $1.10 each.

For the dogs, there is a difference between the left and the right hand sides.

Hope this helps,

Old Iron

What are the "dogs"? I would like to get an old Oliver 75 or NI to restore so I guess I had better learn some terminolgy.

The right name for the "dogs" is drive pawl. I have attached a picture from a Minnesota spreader manual I have to give you an idea of what they are.

Thanks Old Iron!

I like the picture but the New Idea I have is a little different in the Pawl area. DO you know where I can get parts?

Dick,

I know the New Idea has a different set-up than the Minnesota but the Minneasota picture shows it better than my New Idea 10A manual does. I was using it to help with a question that Brian had asked.

I think I have posted the information you were asking for but here it is again. (I think my dogs are slipping again.) :-)

Here is the address to a Amish man up by me that deals in parts for the New Idea spreaders.

Mast Buggy Shop
W5253 Barry Rd.
Dalton, Wisconsin 53926

I know he carries the springs for the dogs so I'm sure he would also handle the dogs.

The link below is for a source I found on the internet. I myself have never done business with them. The link will take you right to there New Idea spreader page.

I hope this information helps you out.

My 2 bits worth,

Old Iron

Boomer,

Thanks much for the kind words. I guess I get lucky every now and then when my dogs engage on the drive wheel without slipping too badly. :-)

Old Iron....Thanks a lot, and I agree with the great explanation; it is very impressive and the picture is very detailed and informative. I am going to take a copy for reference.

If your in a hurry for them I would be happy to pick them up for you and mail them out your way. I have to go out to his place and pick up a blank pitman for a mower I'm working on.

Do you know what model of spreader you have? I don't think it will make a difference but just in case----- ---

There is a place near Sugarcreek, OH that rebuilds NI spreaders and manufactures parts to rebuild. Let me do some checking to see if I can find their name and number.

Could you post the info if you find it? I've also got a NI spreader, and its the best I've seen- would like to keep it going forever.

Here is a link that might help you out some. The link goes right to their New Idea spreader page.

I myself have never used them so I can't vouch for them.
