I have quite a few small IH implements that I want to repaint. 2-row planter, disk, plow, blade, etc.

Most of these no longer have paint and have fairly heavy surface rust.

What is the best way to remove the rust?

What will provide the best finish (sanding, sand blasting, other)?

Where do you go to have the work done?

Where can I find out what the correct colors should be?

It all depends how nice you want your equipment to look and how close to original you want the colours to be. I have used a wire brush to remove rust flakes and then used Tremco rust paint. It comes in most of the colours you will need, red, yellow and even John Deere green.

As the other gentleman stated a wire brush on a 4 1/2 inch sidegrinder works wonders. They are about as fast as anything I have ever used and you are talking aobut a $40 investment for both the grinder and brush.

The main piece of informaiton that I want to pass on to you is to remember that most of the paint that is still on them is LEAD based. This I know from experience USE A MASK

Michael, I have an industrial sandblaster near me and it's $200 per hour!!! for sandblasting..very expensive. I have done two Mc Cormick cultivators and a three furrow plow all with sanding grinder and wire wheels. It takes a lot of work and time but it is cheaper than sand blasting and you don't get sand grit in the bearings and moving parts. I use heavy industrial sand paper, the type used to sand hardwood floors, wire wheels and rubbing by hand. Next I use two coats of a good metal primer surfacer and then rub every thing down by hand with a fine grit , then a light coat of primer surfacer again and I am ready for the final paint coat. I am not an expert but my jobs have turned out well and these pieces have been in a large agricultural show.. Pits can be worked out by sanding and priming over and over untill the pit is filled. There are fillers on the market that you can spray on and sand off easily to fill pits. I have done a New Idea siderake and a Lucknow snowblower as well as my Mc Cormick toys and they have come out well and cheaper than getting them blasted. I had two H fenders blasted and the underside of an H hood and it cost me $75 so it doesn't take long to run up a bill at $200 per hour at the sandblasters. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
