What problem areas do you look for in a side delviery hay rake. I have a NH 55 being offered to me for $400. What makes one usable and another a canidate for the scrap yard? I'm doing a small acerage grass mow with a 47 H annd a IH 27 sickle bar mower. I'll bale up for cattle feed. Any suggestions on the NH 55 rake. Thanks for any advice.

Best rake you can get for the money. I bought a one-owner NH 55 a few years back for $400. Got a parts-manual direct from NH Website for about $10. I would check the driveshaft, as that is the only area mine had ever been repaired on. The neighbor said he had NEVER replaced a tooth (it was missing 7) the entire time he owned it. Talk about durable!

It is unbelievable what these rakes cost and how well they hold their value. I have a picture of one that I restored to use in the implements photo section here and have most of the information about them. I just seen one at a sale bring $275 with half its teeth missing, no drive shaft and axle bushings gone. Its twin which did look like it could go to the field and rake brought $475. If it is not bent up bad then buy it. BTW that is the sweetest sound clicking along behind your tractor raking.

In my part of the country i would by it and not think twice about it until i got home and really looked it over, the new holland rakes sell for no less then 1500 dollars around here, saw one pulled out of the weeds and sold on the spot for 1700 dollars

I'd also look at the universals and drive shaft. They wear out eventually and seem to cost way more than they should. NH is the best, in my opinion. I also think a 5 bar is a lot better than a 4 bar. I had a JD 4 bar that would wind the hay into a tight rope. Now I have a NH 56 5 bar and it makes nice, fluffy windrows that the breeze can dry out a lot better. I think the difference is the extra bar.

I have 2 model 56 rakes and they have been very good for me. The areas I would look for on the 55 you are talking about would be 1. Look for play in the axles, 2. Look for play in the gear box and the other end of the basket, 3. If you can pull it some before buying see if the engagement lever will kick the gearbox out of gear, I have heard of some of the engagement dogs being welded to the gear in the gearbox instead of being replaced when it gave problems.
You will want to look at the tine bar bearings as well. Other than those things I can't think of anything else too look for right off hand. Rakes are pretty straight forward machines, You just need to give a good once over and check for any extreme play, it will have to have some. I had to replace a hub on one side of one of mine last year where one of the dogs in it had locked and broke it when I turned so you will want to look at that area as well. Sounds like a good price on one, even if you used it for parts. It doesn't take long to rack up a good size parts bill at the local New Holland dealer!
