Can anyone tell me how deep you can go with a tractor mounted post hole digger. I want to put up a pole barn and the poles need to go below the frost line which is 5 feet. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd check with local contractors about hiring the job done with a boom/auger truck. Small builders can't afford the equipment but usually know who does it on a custom basis. Otherwise I'd check with skidloader dealers for a rental unit. Might find one with a long enough auger. Last rental I did was about $3 per hole, 12inch diameter.

Pretty deep frostline, whew dawgies. Our Danuser hyd. post digger has an extention on it. We dig a 9" hole an put the hyd. motor head slap down into the hole as we get bottomed out... thats about 52"
Only do that on our corner posts for h.t. fence though. We run it on an old Kuboataa and an ancient David Brownbelly 990... no special hook-ups or nothin... look into the Danuser rig- somethin special there fer sure...

Thanx everyone for the guidance. Steve K, you are correct on the 42 inches but the building is up near Duluth. The frost line up there is 50 inches so they recommend going down 5 feet.

Dig a 3ft hole, lift auger about 6-8 inches. shut tractor OFF. Unhook auger. Install extension. Start tractor and finish hole. Reverse to remove. Slow but I did my pole barn that way.

I live in Minnesota and you only have to go 4 feet here. The frost line is 42 inches

If your tractor can lift the digger high enough to transport it you can get or have made an extention for the auger

Ours only gets us about 3 feet down. We have a 12" auger but still have to dig the hole bigger on corner posts and light poles. I wonder if the rental shops have a digger that hooks on a bobcat that goes deep enough for you?
