Anyone have any pros or cons on post hole diggers? I have a 2N Ford Funk Conversion-6cyl-and have a lot of post holes to dig. Are the ones at TSC any good? Never used one before, just thought I could get some advice.

I bought one of those cheapo augers, and it never would cut through sod and roots very well. If it did bite in, it would shear the shear bolt. Danhuser makes a good auger, but Bush Hog makes one that will take a lot of abuse, and will bore right through tough sod for less $$ than a Danhuser. I bought the Bush Hog, and i'm very happy with it. There's a lot of them around here, and i'm not hearing any complaints from any one. Robert

Hi Keith,
If you have alot of holes to dig year in and year out, I would buy a Danhuser F8. They are a heavy duty digger and last for years. They will cost you more than a TSC, but they will outlast them. They also make a smaller model. I think they call them a 10-20 or a 20-40 I can't remember.

Hi Keith,
I dug about 100 holes with my 8N several years ago when I was building a horse riding ring and fence. I borrowed the digger from a friend and it was well used. It had a lot of loose play where the auger connected to the gear box, but it worked. I was working alone and would have to re-position the tractor slightly to get the hole started. I think these diggers work better if you have a helping hand standing by it to guide and get it started. However, as with anything, you have to be careful when someone is near moving machinery. Good luck.

Holes should start easily without an assistant if the location is marked by taking out one shovelfull of dirt, leaving a 'V' shape. Drop the point in, plumb the auger by adjusting the tractor position, and start digging. If the ground is hard and dry, dump some water in each hole after marking them.
