I have plates for sorghum and I wanted to know how fast do I need to go and what settings for about 10-12lbs. I plan on using a international H and my fastest pulling speed is about 5-3/8mph. But I am also curious(being I never grew sorghum), how thick does the crop need to be for grain sorghum in dry to some irrigated ground? I have heard about 12-14lbs. What does something like that have for plant population? And what would be the correct lbs per acre be in 30" rows. Any help would be great, Thanks!

Hi Plow Man,
The speed that you drive won't change your planting speed. You change your seeding rate by changing the gearing on the planter.

Most sorghum bags have a planting rate chart on them. I have a 1240 planter and I use the filler plates and plant at 3-4lbs. per acre in extremely dryland. It is also sensitive to planting depth and temperature. Don't plant it deeper than 11/2" or if the ground is colder than 60 degrees. Also it has a relatively poor germination rate, 80% or so. That means you can plant it heavier than suggested and still be ok. 10-14lbs. sounds about right for wet conditions. I don't know the settings for a 494A but I know the thick sorghum plates plant pretty heavy, so I would set your planter in the lowest gear and see how thick it plants.

Good luck,

Plowman, I planted about an acre of Dela Sorghum last year just for the fun of it. I also put in about 2 acres of certified milo. The sorghum is a smaller seed than milo so the planter plates shouldn't be the same. Normal application should have been about 3 lbs per acre but my John Deere planter dropped all 5 lbs in one acre. It was more dense than corn and much taller. We measured heights up to 14 feet to the seed head. The stalks were a little smaller in diameter than corn but when cut and chewed it was incredibly sweet. Prolly more like sugar cane than anything. They just dripped moisture too. Deer preferred the milo to the sorgham though for some reason. The height might have had something to do with it.
