I saw a New Idea # 272 (I think) at the auction yard and was wandering if someone could tell me about it as far as how good they are and what kind of job they do. It looks like it hasn't been used much and is not bent up. I can tell it's been sitting up for a while, so I'd like to know is what you might bid on this unit if you were interested in buying it.

Thanks in advance; Barney

The 272 is a flail type mower. They take quite a
bit of power to run in heavy hay and if the flails
are dull they rip the hay as opposed to cutting.
The hay does dry fast as the roller flattens hay
stubble after cutting then the cut hay stands up
as the stubble comes back up. The 272 is good at
cutting downed hay. The flails cost more then
sickle sections and are a two man job to change.
I much prefer sickle type cutters. The 272 is now
quite an old machine and not much in demand or
favor so the price should reflect that. I would
think $250-350 would be fair, but to be honest, I
would avoid altogether.
