Vibrating Flail Mower

I recently bought a 5 foot Mott 3ph flail mower at a consignment auction for $100. It needed a new PTO shaft (the yoke was broken on the old one, and some previous genius had welded on the cross bearing), so I bought a fairly cheap metric one at TSC and replaced the yoke on one side with one that fit (the gear box on this has a standard 540 PTO 6-splinded shaft on it). I think that the yokes are aligned correctly - the shafts only connect one way. The hole for the top link had worn so that it was very loose as well. When I run this mower it vibrates horribly. I don't dare run it any faster than 3/4 PTO speed. I've looked, and all of the flails seem to be there. I'm going to fix the top link hole as well. Is there anything else I should look at ? So far I have $175 into this ...

Thanks to all - I will have the slop out of the top link tomorrow, so I can start looking at it again (although it's pretty cold here in Mich right now !).

Yup.
I had the same problem last year. When I wound up the mower it sounded like a 747. Neighbors 500 yards away came out of their houses. I think I ended up replacing and moving around 17 blades. But some had been replaced but not balanced on each side of the drum. You have to watch that the blades on opposites of the drums are both either new or worn the same ... keep it balanced!!!!

One more thought. Is the vibration 'high frequency' or 'low'?

If it's high frequency it's likely from something that's turning fast.. like the disks.

If it's low frequency, look to the pto drivetrain.

Good luck. Let us know what you find. Adds to everybody's 'store of knowledge' that way.

One thing I forgot. The hole on the toplink, well on mine anyway is actually a slot. Set correctly, the pin should be in the center of the slot. This allows the mower to ride on the rear roller and float over uneven ground.

I have a 5ft. JD 360 and it vibrates;
1. if I lift it too high and the universal joints can't handle the angle.
2. when starting out, once the rpms are up it smooths out.

After checking these two things, I would see if the shaft that the flails bolt to is bent (say if a large rock or stump tried to make its way around, or if the side bearings are worn. The fact that the yoke was broken and there was welding done should tell you that the unit had seen some rough use. HTH.

Several shots in the dark.

Bearings shot in one or more of the flail disks or intermediate drive parts. Do any of the disks have 'slop' in them?

Anything bent out on the bar? If somebody hit something hard there could be damage out there.

I'll bet ya the drum is bent, or you have the yolks misaligned, or both. The yolks on either end of the PTO shaft should be parrallel with each other. Good luck, Esev

When all is well, it should just "Hummm" at about any speed..... I lost one chain w/cutter last year, and it vibrated a fair amount....replaced it, and it was fine.... Those flail mowers Have to be in pretty good balance.....!!! Good Luck..hope that is all it is..!!

And all the flails have to be the same, too. If somebody mixed up different lengths on the rotor, that can cause balance problems.

Balence is the answer. Now is it the pto or the drum that is out of balance? forget the top link we run chains on ours so they can float on the rear roller. If the Flail roller is bent warped or has uneven blades on it it will viberate. High speed sounds a lot like the drum roller is out of balance not the pto. Let me know which model it is as I am running about 20 of those mower and have seen a lot of different types of bearing on them and setup that could cause a wobble in the drum roller. If you really want to fix it like a pro take the drum off and put it in a lathe and turn it for accurcy--- you will find the problem there what ever is wrong with the drum. Good luck and fix it :)
