Understand from reading a bunch of earlier posts that the Vermeer and N.H. are the better choices.
Had a guy call about a N.H. 850... know about that one? Could use some advice. Don't know how much to spend, and what to avoid. We won't bale more than 300 bales this year.
Neighbor and me both have other jobs and I have little critters hangin on my pants when I come in. Point is we're going to round bales to free up some time, and don't want that freed up time spent on keeping up with a breakin down baler... Most of the hay land is flat. My tractor is 52 hp. Sure would like to know more than I do about this one before I jump in and spend the college fund. Any help you could extend would come welcome. Thanks- Mike

Did not bother to read the other answers you have gotten but there are two makes of round roller one is Vimeer and the other is John Deere. I like the JD open troute baler. DO NOT BUY a closed troute baler or one with chains on it like the old NH baler ....you looking for trouble. For the Money find a JD 435 baler and bale from 3 to 6 foot bales of you desire.

WITH A 52HP TRACTOR A 4X4 BALER WILL BE EASIER TO HANDLE. MASSEY DEALER IN ASHLAND HAD 2 N.H. BALERS LAST WEEK. A 630 THAT LOOKED LIKE NEW AND A FAILY GOOD LOOKING 848. ALSO HAD A JD 430 THAT LOOKS TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THEM OUT. REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR OWN BALER YOU CAN BALE WHEN THE HAY IS READY AND NOT WHEN THE CUSTOM BALER IS. GOOD LUCK.

Mike,
I wouldn't buy an 850 New Holland baler. They don't make much of a bale, the bales are real sloppy and spoil quick. If you are going to buy a chain type baler, an 848 New Holland would make a better bale and would be small enough for a 52 HP tractor to handle well. You would be pushing it to bale 5'x6' bales, especially on hilly ground. Myself, I would purchase an "open throat" later model belt type baler. If you get too cheap on a baler (been there, done that) you'll be sorry for it later!

I had a Vemeer 504C made a 4X5 bale weighed about 500#. Wasn't packed real tight but could bale hay that was a little damper. I never saw a windrow it wouldn't swallow. Took about a 40hp tractor to run. They sell now for anywhere from $2200 to $3000. A good simple tough baler.

I have a C-IH 8420 4X3 baler that makes 500+# bales. Works great for me. Not much HP required
but you do need some hydraulic capacity. I use an Oliver Super 88 most of the time. This baler is also sold as a Heston and Gehl.

I would personally stay away from the old nh chain
balers with coil springs. Models 845,847,850,851
I would suggest a NH model 848 chain baler with
air springs. It makes a pretty good bale. 47x54
800 Lbs. I can't tell much differance between it and my inlaw's NH 630 roll-belt baler. The
JD, Vermeer NH belt balers are all good, but they
are kind of expensive. For your size tractor I
would only recommend the 4x4, 4x5, 5x4 baler sizes.

I use to do all my own baling and i final got smart with a family you have such little time and so much to do we would bale 700 to 1000 bales a year and i found a guy that for 14 dollars a bale he would do it all and that is cheaper than you can do it last time i figured it up it was well over 14 and it took a parts bill from john deere before i figured it out plus all night putting the baler back together that is my two cents

Don't overlook the New Idea machines,we have used a NI483 4x4 baler since 1988,bought it new,never had to fix it yet,do around 900-1000 bales a year,IH sold them as the 3440.Most times i have 60hp on it,but we've made bales with a DB880,that's around 40hp

If you have any rocks at all stay away from the 850. Them balers and rocks just don't mix especially the small ones the size of your fist. Before long, usually 1/2hour, you will bend a bar, this will cause the chain to jump the sprockets and you will spend the rest of the day, if not the rest of the week fixing it.

I say this to anyone contemplating on buying a chain baler; If they were so good, why aren't they being made today? No, they're gone the way of the dinosaur, for good reason. I'm done now.

Todd is right the 5800 Hestons are very good, easy pulling balers. For a 50 hp tractor, they are a good one and resonably priced. Around $1000-$1500.

Good luck and happy haying!

Any NH baler with its model # 8xx is an older chain and slat baler, not a belt baler. NH belt balers will be 6xx. While there are still good chain balers out there, in general they are old, and expensive to maintain. Bales made with a chain baler are softer, and will suffer more losses from outdoor storage than bales made with a good belt baler.

i have run an 855 new holland chain baler and it will bale a tighter bale then any of the new balers would think about doing and this is in fescue! this baler bales a 51/2x51/2' bale so its a big baler. we use it on a 4240 w/ straight pipe and it makes it groan sometimes. anyway that bale i was telling you about was so thight we couldnt get a spear in it, after working on it for half an hoour we finally was able to stab it good enough to move. by now this baler has baled alot of hay and is starting to make sloppy looking bales but i think they stand up straight long(dont sag like the vermeer 504 SI does). i think that baler would be a bit big for your tractor as it is just a 55hp rig, you need something along the lines of a vermeer Rebel 5400 or 5500, they are a lighter baler then the 554 or 664XL balers are(cheaper too) but for no more hay then your doing i think that would be a good choice that way you have a reliable baler but still yet cheap. just my 2 cents.

For no more than 300 B per Y would you be better off hireing it done ? Remember one break down could cost you your hay crop. Also having to hire it done anyway. Look at some bale that were done by the person that you are considering to do the baling. I'm retired now but at one time I was in your shoes, I say hire it done. Then all you will have to do is haul them to the barn AND store them under cover. It makes me sick to see , as I drive along these country road, sitting outside

Hiring it done has it's problems too. Goes about $6 - 7 a bale here. Mostly dairy farmers, they don't have time to get to your hay when it is ready, I find it harder to get it hired done in a timely fashion - you almost garrentee it will get rained on when you hire the job done.

300 bales @ $6 is $1800 a year. In three years a fair used baler is paid for, including twine & fuel. You can sell it again for close to what you paid.

Seems owning would be the way to go for 300 bales, that's actually quite a few around 'here'.
