I have a small trellised apple orchard. I was wondering if there is anyone who has used a 3 point landscape rake to rake small limbs into a pile. Would this piece of equipment work for this type of application? I get tired of bending over and picking up small twigs and limbs. The bigger stuff I do carry off but there is not much of that. My two kids are off in college so I am trying of figure out how to save my back and speed up the job.

If you're talking about a small wheel rake designed to pull behind a garden tractor, (looks like a wheel hay rake,) no, it will tangle up the branches in the teeth. If you're talking about a 3pt hitch rake that looks like an oversized hand garden rake, then maybe, but I'll bet you'll do a lot of tractor manuvering to get the job done. Picking by hand seems to be the only way I can get the job done!

Another idea to consider is using a "brush hog" - I know it sound silly but they do a good job of chopping brush to small pieces and leaving a useful much. It might be worth a try - could you borrow or rent one?

Hi Mark,
We both have similar problems. Mine happens to be pecan limbs instead of apple. I think a landscape rake will do o.k. as I looked at them myself recently. I didn't buy one because I already have an old bermuda grass scratcher that works o.k. on the small stuff. Like you, I have to pick up the larger limbs by hand. The new landscape rakes appear well built and I think one would handle larger limbs than my scratcher. Good luck.

I have 10 acres of pine trees and underbrush. I use a 5 foot brush hog on my 8N to cut the brush and a 6 foot 3-point "rock rake" to pile it up. The rake can be rotated 180 degrees and works best for me when pushing backwards. Sticks get caught in the teeth, so I have to get off and "Floss" regularly. Much faster than picking by hand. Works well on small sticks and larger branches, too.
