I just got a lead on a pull type plow for a really low price. I haven't looked at it yet and I don't know what size it is. I was wondering how well a TO-30 will pull say a pull type 2-14. Any body have expierence with a pull type plow and a To-30 or N?? I read a post on the "N board" a couple days ago and it diddn't sound like the Fergies and the N's will do very well. A 3-pt plow will actually pull the back of the tractor down and increase the traction and the pull type will not. I copyed a couple examples of what they were saying. Any help will be appreciated.

"NOW, the design of the N series hitch, by Ferguson, was such that the suction of the plow (the force pulling the plow deeper into the ground) was transfered to the rear wheels. This gave the lighter N's the same ability to pull a plow as it's heavier contemporary tractors made by other companies. They all used plows that were pretty much simple pull type, not unlike that pulled by a horse or mule. So these plows could not transfer the suction load to the rear wheels of their tractors."

"I also grew up on both and H and 8n. I agree with your assessment. Plowing they were equal. Although the 8n would never be able to handle a pull type plow like the H or any other pull type implement. But it had a lot of other advantages."

You will want to be careful with a drag plow, these tractors were designed for a 3 point hitch plow, I was talking to a guy who tried to plow with an old 9N Ford, he hooked up the drag plow and when he pulled the rope to lower the plow the front end of his tractor rose up into the air. He was lucky that he was able to bail out in time. There were a lot of accidents with drag plows when they got stuck on rocks or roots. Most had release mechanisms or shear bolts but the operators would often override them and with an old plow the mechanism could be rusted shut. You should read about Harry Ferguson, he studied this problem and as a result developed the 3 point hitch plow.

I wouldn't try to pull a trailer plow with a TO-30 if it was given to me(the plow). You'll be much happier learning to use a 3-point plow with 2 14" bottoms, coulters and jointers with good plowshares(points). From your question I can understand you have little or no plowing experience so to minimize your frustration you want the best rig you can get to get started with. Also, figure out how you're going to lay out your plowing procedure, get some advice from an experienced person first if possible.

there is a reason the pull type is a really good price. Forget it. Get a three point hitch plow that was made for the Ford or Fergson. Same plow. Two bottom or go to Centeral Tractor and buy a new one
