Through the 2-Cylinder club, I bought the 1951 year John Deere tape. I ordered it for the MT tractor shown in it, but the first was a 45 minute long part about the No 5 mower narrated by Ward Cleaver, Hue Boumont, Beaver's dad.

The number 5 mower is the toughest mower John Deere ever built. In our area there are more #5's still running than any of the other models of John Deere mowers.

Well, the wooden pitman arm will last a good season so long as you don't have too many gopher holes, the big gear case on the back end needs to be full of oil up to the plug, but I only have used this one going on 35 years. John in Ne.

I used a number 5 mower for many years on a JD MT and on a G. mine has the quick hitch option and is raised by a hydraulic cylinder. The operator's manuel I have also lists parts and there were variations on the hitches to fit most tractors of the time in cluding other brands. I now use a #8 mower which is just sort of an updated #5. Not sure it is any better mower though. As was said above they will cut good as long as you keep the guards in good shape and sickle sharp. Sickles are the same as the #8 and still available as are guards and most other parts.

I use one for all of my hay, we did about 1,000 bales last year with it and my Farmall M , I had to modify the hitch a bit to get it to work on the M. It worked great as long as I kept everything where it is supposed to be and sharp. I found it completely buried while digging a hole, so it hasn't been taken care of! I painted it and replaced the guards, cutter blade and pitman. Chris

They were good mowers. JD sold lots and lots of them. I think you can still get most all the parts and books from JD as well as other sources. Around here one will bring $35 to $125 depending on condition.
