What to use as a Drawbar Pin? Bent 4 so far :(

I recently got some pull type implements for my Oliver 550 Dsl. In particular an IH 37 disk harrow with an 11 hole drawbar inserted in the lift arms. (with stablizers & downlock). Been playing with it to get familiar with its use.

As such, I have now bent 4 pins and had to drive them out with a sledge hammer. I used the pins (3) that attach toplink to tractor. Also bent (1) of those orange T-handle pins. The pins bend into a U shape from the resistance of the harrow and the fwd. momentum of the tractor. Inside radius of the bend is the thickness of the 11 hole drawbar.

What do ya'll use as a pin? Needing something strong.

Thanks y'all for all the information. After reviewing all the information I see the error in my ways. I will correct the situation best I can.

I have been turning to tight, not always raising implement when turning due to no remote hydraulics, and no factory drawbar. 11 hole drawbar use is a stop-gap measure until I can locate a true swinging drawbar.

I will watch my turns from here on out and get me a new pin. I am glad I have only bent pins and nothing more costly. The clevis has approx. a 3/4" gap larger than the thickness of my 11 hole draw bar. Will also be looking to fix this.

Thanks again!

quit using that 11 hole drawbar and use your swinging drawbar in a fixed position, 5/8" bolt plenty of strength for that tractor and disk

I wrote this reply lastnight, but board would not accept response. Shep, It sounds more like it may be possible that you are turning too short and the pin is kinking when the bar strikes the side of the hitch. We pulled a 32 pan 370 disk for many years with an IH 574 and a MF 275 and never bent a pin (using the belly drawbar). If your 11 pin drawbar has 3/4" holes you can cut a triangle out of 5/8" or thicker steel and drill two holes to match the drawbar and drill a 1 or 1-1/8" to hook your disk to with a larger pin. Most of the old Farmalls had a similar plate that would bolt to the wide drawbar or the front bolster. Many people used to pull the NH rollabar rakes with 3-pt drawbars so they could raise and lower the front of the rake. The hitches on most of those rakes would crack from the stress and twisting that occurred when turning sharply.

Something is not right if you are bending boughten pins. Check out what the others have said, before you break something more expensive. Unless you are using 1/4" pins??? :)

The pin should comfortably fill the holes, not pounded in tight, but not sloppy loose either. The 2 holes on your implement should be fairly close to the width of your drawbar. And drawbars like you are using are real bad for not allowing to to turn short without breaking something.

Hi Shep,
must be really pulling hard, or its binding in tight turns like Murray (below) says. Wonder if the clevis on the tongue of your disk is too wide (too open). that would put a lot of bending stress on the pin. if the 3pt drawbar were thicker and fit the clevis tighter might help. or reduct the clevis clearance.

I doubt if the draft of the disc is bending the pin. Most likely the hitch is binding against the drawbar when turning

Most assuredly Murray is right; the clevis (hitch) is to short; i.e. distance between hole and inside rear. When you make a sharp turn, the drawbar hits the side of the clevis. Something has to give and the pin is the "weakest link".
