I bought one of those nice little two row planters made by John Deere, probably in the late '50's or early '60's. It has the small hopper with plate on the inside of the big hopper. The plates are driven by a shaft turned by a single chain set between the hoppers with three different sizes of gears to change the seed rates. The press wheels are two pieces of vee-shaped steel and have a narrow steel band between the vee to close the top of the furrow. It has "knife" openers and the sheilds that smooth the top of the row. It has a single adjusting rod running down between the hoppers. And it is a three point hitch setup. I said all that to ask this. WHAT IS THE NUMBER OF THIS TYPE PLANTER? I'd really like a manual to go with it but I dont know what it was called. I'm willing to bet someone out there knows. Thanks.

I concure with Adam. It's must likely a 246 setup. The 247 setup is used more for cotton and peanuts. The small hopper inside the main hopper is for planting beans (pole type) in the row with the corn. You have a good find considering the corn/bean hopper is considered rare to find these days as it was an optional item. The guide shoes are also an optional item. The manual (OM-B25366) and parts catalog (PC-399) are still available from JD.

It is a 246-247 planter.
