Can anyone help me with "Hands On" ideas on how to pick up Walnuts? Besides the Rake! Don't want them, just want to get them out of the way of the Lawn Mower! Thanks Dave

I had the same problem. After 15 years of picking, raking, shoveling, pushing with the loader, etc., I got out the chainsaw. I now have a nice stack of dried lumber in the barn and no nuts to pick up or trees to mow around.

They do make a machine that can be adapted for walnuts. I read about it in this months American Small Farm magazine. It looks similar to a manure spreader, but is made for gathering pecans. The guy in the article had adapted one for walnuts. I think the cost was pretty high though. Good luck.

I don't know if you have tried a lawn sweeper or not but I have found them to do amazing things. They will pick up walnut sized rocks from the driveway. I don't have walnuts but we do have sweet gum balls all over the place down here and this thing just loads them up as fast as you can pull it with a riding lawn mower. Ask around the neighborhood an I bet you can find one to try. Other than that, I would try to find some laborer's and pay them one Saturday morning at about $8 an hour. Might be the cheapest answer.

Hey guys here is the deal. They are all over the Mother-in-laws yard every Spring and need to be Raked up before Lawn Mowing time. This has been done with a Rake{hand} and a Shovel in the past, but there must be a better way. I had thought about the Golf Course Ball Retreever but don't know where to borrow/buy one? TIA Dave

I'm with Jerry(al). Put and ad in the local paper, FREE walnuts. Here, your mother-in-law's lawn would be trampled so bad that you wouldn't have to mow it. Kill two birds with one stone. or walnut.

PTO driven side delivery rake, set just above the lawn. You could at least wind row them.

Drop the disc down on them or a good tuning plow.

If all you have a is a lawn mower, they make them pull time lanscaping rakes for them. You could set it just above the grass. Or train a good dog to carry them outta the way...

I have one of those scaled down wheel rakes called an estate rake. They are a six wheel unit that covers about 4 feet, and are designed to be pulled by a garden tractor. It does a fair job of windrowing walnuts, although you may want to make mor than one pass to get 'em all. At least that way, you have your nuts in a row!

Have used it on pine needles, and it works OK, but you may have to make more than one pass. Will do a pretty good job of dethaching in the spring too. again, you may have to make more than one pass!

I lived in Georgia for a while and saw them use a machine that they drove over the pecans to pick them up. Pecans are worth enough to make good money raising. I imagine you could do something in that line. Another thought is to borrow the golf course ball pickup machine they use. Walnuts are about that size once the hulls are off.
