The size of a mower is based on 5 hp per cutting foot. A 6 foot mower needs at least a 30 hp tractor. you could go as high as 10 foot depending on what you are mowing, heavy brush or regular grass.

Practically speaking...what are you planning on doing with it? 59 horse power can pull a lot of bush hog. If you go with a 3pt then your limited to the size of the tractor not the pulling power of the tractor. If you have a lot of field with a pull type as large as you can afford would be fine. If you need to do more presise cutting under trees etc. A 3pt may be what you want. I cut 42 acre of field very nicely...with a pull type 6ft bush hog brand using a Farmall "M". Your JD sould pull whatever you can afford. I would stay away from to large because it cost more to maintain and may require a larger trailer to tow it.

A lot depends on what you are going to be cutting. Brush takes more HP than say clipping pastures.

Your 720 has 59 HP. I have a Massey with 54 HP and I pull a six foot. It's not because it won't pull a little bigger but then you have to lift it.

I would say if you wanted a light duty, I might go as high as 8-9 foot. Then the bigger you go you go to the dual spindle jobs after about 7 feet.

There's a site called bushhog international where they will give you HP requirements for size. You can run a bigger drawbar type than you can a 3 point lift type also.

Also ask the question of yourself "are you going to be traveling on the highway any?"

Your tractor would pull an 8 foot with no problem but there are a lot of other questions you will want to ask yourself.

A 720 diesel lives and works back behind my place. Saw it hooked to one of those bat wing bush hogs. So at least a 14 footer would be my guess.
