Where did all the 3pt sickle mowers go?

It seems to me that since they came out with things like hay conditioners that 3pt sickle mowers would be a dime a dozen. Are they still in use much today? I've been looking for a used one and don't see many for sale, certainly not in my area (southern Indiana).

I have a Ford Series 50I that I have been trying to sell for $300.00 for a year now. It is is good shape. I have posted it on this site and it seams that no one is interested in them anymore. I live in Eastern Kansas if your interested.

Tom, That's probably exactly what I'm looking for. I was hoping to spend less than $300. Unfortunately, getting it shipped to me would run the cost up to $450 or so. That's why I'm trying to find one in my area, since I have a trailer I could save the shipping costs. We're considering a trip out west this summer. I'll check back with you then and if you still have it I'll bring my trailer along!

Most pitman mowers can be bought for a cheaper price than those that are belt driven. I agree with the guys that price depends on where you are located. I still think that they are a handy tool to have around. Brush hogs do a great job in open pasture but sickles are far more superior around fence lines, ditches and banks. I have restored a John Deere #5 for shows and use a John Deere #9 for the pasture's odds and ends jobs. Good luck

I just bought the one shown in the following link / auction. The seller is in Kentucky, and seems to be god guys. The shippping, was around $129 to palet it and truck it to SW Missouri.

It also comes with an extra 7' knife. This unit was built probably in the late 1960's or early 1970's

How many of them do you want? I have been looking for a trailer type sickle mower and can't find one of those with mechanicle lift. In this area of Indiana there are tons of 3 point mowers. One place that has a bunch of them is just south of Spencer on Hwy 67 about a mile or two out of town. He has about 6 of them if not more. Riddles farm equip in Spencer has several also. My tractor (f-12) has no hydraulics and a plain draw bar so if you see one I could use let me know.

I just called the folks at Riddles and the sickle bar mowers they have are "parts" mowers that are not field ready. I'm still looking for a 3-point hitch 7'+ sickle bar mower for my JD830. I live in Ky. and I am having the same problem with finding a reasonably priced unit in my area.

Bob you want a New idea 31 model mower it is a mechanical lift that runs off the pto and there are even instructions in the manual specific to your F20 for proper set up. I found one and only had to haul it away before it went into the dumpster for scrap it works well behind my Allis C since I dont have any auxiliary hydraulics on it. The only thing I don't like about it is there are no provisions on it for a rear hitch or pto to run the crimper behind it on the larger tractors with enough power to do it. T.J.

Thanks TJ, I will look for one but they seem to be scarce around here or total junk from years sitting in the fence row. I did hear of a junk man about 3 miles away off the beaten path, that may have something like that. I may go see what he has today.

Hi Danny, I don't remember the name of the place or the phone number, but if you go there during the week and he is not there he has a phone number posted next to the door of the building for his home where he can be reached. The place is easy to find, there is a bunch of machinery sitting right next to the hiway.I guess he is semi retired but still dabbles in older implements. Some times he goes to shows on the weekends so during the week is the best time.If you go to Riddles. His shop is only a mile or two south of there, so it would be easy to compare prices.Stop at his place first and get the phone number and call him from town, then go to Riddles.I have never called him but have stopped at that place at least 10 times and he is never at the shop. A friend bought an Allis from him and said you just have to call, he lives close by so the wait isn't long.I always get there around dark so I didn't want to bother him that late.

Well, I finally made to Spencer and went to Riddles and the other place. Like you said, the sickle mowers at the Riddles New Holland dealer were just parts mowers. All of them were the pitman arm type. The other place just south of Spencer on SR67 is Thompson Implement, (812) 829-2124 or (812) 829-2934 at home. He had 4 sickle mowers, 2 were OK but had cracked frames, one was in real bad shape, and one was in good shape, but it was a 9' cutter bar which is too big for me. It was well worth the trip to have something to compare to. No one was there, so I didn't get prices. They were JD and one Im not sure of and all were the belt drive type.

Tractor Supply Company and possibly other supply stores probably have the wood part (Quality Farm/Central Tractor had them, but since they've gone under, I have no where to go within 100 miles). As for the metal part, did you try the JD dealer (might have the wood too)? If he can't get the part for you, at least have him get the part number. You can then call salvage yards and use the number for reference. Good luck.

I think most of the sickle bars are sitting behind the barn or in a junk pile somewhere.

The modern disk mowers are so much more effecient and lower maintenace that once the farmers got them, they never looked back.

I've got a couple sicklebars in the junk pile here.. don't know where the rocker box is though.
Oh, and a I've got a couple boxes of MF sickle bar blades that I'd probably send to anyone who wants to pay the shipping.

$1000 is way too much! Sounds like I need to go knocking on some farmer's doors and ask them if they've got one laying around! I thought about running a want ad, but the folks that might happen to have one they'd sell probably have better things to do with their time than read through all the want ads.

Go to the next Woodburn Auction (probably about the first weekend in April, again first weekend in June- watch the Capitol Press)- Usually some sickle mowers there, and they never bring over $200. Seldom over $100, unless if an MF Dynabalance, or some other "good" one. Here in western Washington, sickle mowers were always a headache because the grass is usually lying flat by the time the weather gets good enough to cut. Disc mowers are far superior in "downed stuff".

Hey Mike, you don't know of a decent cheap(stress on cheap) rake for sale do you? A side del. style would be fine, repairs are doable too. I need to find something before season hits. I already get the Press, is there a website to hook up with the Woodburn sale? I'll look for that in the Press too.

there are some still in use, but most everyone uses the disc cutters/mower conditioners. they do a much better and faster job of cutting hay. you should be able to find a sickle mower at farm auctions and farm estate sales and also look in the classifieds under farm machinery. usually those are the best places to find one.

I strongly disagree with the statement that disc mowers do a much better and faster job than a sickle, a sickle will cut a little cleaner than a disc and just as fast in my fields, coastal bermuda. Yes you can still buy them brand new about $3500. You also don't need a 100 horse cab tractor to run a sickle, a little 3 cyl. diesel runs em just fine, they are a little more maintenance and require a more skilled operator, but they cost half as much as a disc and do a perfectly acceptable job, if not better, they just ain't "maintenance free".

i am not trying to start any arguments with you about sickle mowers, but i would have to see proof that they are better than disc mowers. i have seen and have cut hay fields with both and the disc mower beats the sickle hands down every time. the disc mower also cuts much cleaner and does not ever get clogged and you can also go back over a missed spot without jamming the mower with grass. almost every hay maker i know of has switched to disc mowers because time is money in the hay business.

Very many of the first disc mowers and mower/conditioners that were sold in this area back in the eighties and early nineties (the ones with the full length gearbox and shaft systems across the cutter) are in the junk pile. People hate them because of all the headaches caused when you slam into a rock with one at high speed. Local hay producer did $1500 damage on a Gehl machine. Hit a rock, broke a gear on one disk, broken piece chewed up the rest of the line. Also had problems with all the lube oil running to the downhill side when cutting sloped fields, causing overheating on the last disc uphill. The newer machines with modular gearboxes are just fine, but it will take a while to 'reconvert' some of the people around here to disc machines.

i hear ya about damages when hitting objects. sometimes an object is buried in the high grass and it is unavoidable and ultimately very expensive. a farmer friend hit a piece of rebar and it made a mess of his disc cutter.

I heard all about hitting rocks with a disc cutter at a local auction earlier this winter. Here in Coal country, Sullivan county Indiana, there are some guys who do hay on old "reclaimed" strip mines and believe me, there are no shortages of rocks sticking up on those. One guy I talked to got rid of his new disc mower after breaking it badly 4 times and bought an old used sickle bar and was 10 times happier. He said the worst he has done to it was a broken guard or a nicked section.Lots cheaper and easier to fix than gear cases and spindles.

since i just spent the last 6 months hauling fuel into the coal mines in sullivan county, i can vouch for the rocks everywhere! plus old cables and such. and DONT run over anything that is lying on ground and looks like a firehose!!! it has 7200 volts going thru it!. and just because the lights are 20-30 feet apart, dont drive between them! it is ONE vehicle , not 2!lol got to get some parts for my #3 ac sickle mower. since i bought 30 acres south of coal city,in! . maybe we need to make a list of the used equipemnt dealers. there is one i saw on us 20 in ne in who specializes in horsedrawn equipment! . plus rusty mcdonald in knightstown ,indiana. there is dave watson in mooresville,in. i've dealt with both and have been satisfied. and have wanted to stop in at riddles.

Talk about disrepair, have you ever been through Coalmont? Man! Houses falling in(some burned out shells) and an old junk mobile home that is not much better than the house, sitting next to the house that the people live in. I don't think I have ever been through a town that had more junk sitting around and when I say junk I mean piles of broken cheapy riding mowers, fried bicycles, toasted window AC units, dead Escorts and Chevettes, you know, the stuff you see along some river bottoms and ravines in Kentucky. Boy, if zoning ever hits over there, there will sure be a scramble! There are a few nice houses, but it seems like there are more bad ones than good ones.Old lady here in Hymera has a totally rotted into the ground 69 Impala with a 396. She says " It has that Racing engine in it" and wants $3000 for for the pile of Iron Oxide. Yep, the engine is locked up (and probly has a cracked block from no antifreeze), and there is not one part on the whole body that is useable including the frame. At least the glass and tires aren't rusted out, just moss covered. hehehe!
