I am considering purchasing a Ford 4000 or other 50 hp tractor. I need to clear an area of 1-2" diameter brush, with an occasional 3" dia. tree. Is this the right size tractor? What size (gearbox hp) bush hog should I get? Thanks for the help.

Most 6' medium duty cutters have a 90-100 hp rated gearbox and are rated for 2" material.
Do not buy anything less than a medium duty mower if you plan on "pushing it" by cutting 3" or 4" brush. Examples of med. duty models would be Bush Hog model 286, Rhino TW-72, and Woods MD72. Please note none of these cutters are warrantied in 3" or larger material.

What about the tractor HP for these cutters? Will a 50 hp tractor be subject to damage when using a larger 90-100 gearbox hp cutter?

No. The HP rating is not to be exceeded and you want enough HP as to not over work the tractor but the slip clutch will take all of the bumps and bruises for the tractor if it is set up right. If you are getting into that big of stuff, you dont want one with shear pins...

You should be fine with the Ford. I use a 20HP JD Diesel utility on a 5' Woods bushhog with few problems. Sometimes I have to go over the big stuff a couple of times, but it gets the job done. With 50HP to play with, you should have no problems. 1"-2" stuff shouldn't be much of a problem, I've run over 3 and 4" poplar with mine. I'm not familiar with "gearbox hp" ratings, but it would seem logical to me to get one matched to tractor HP to avoid tearing up equipment.
