Hello. I found an old McCormick mower behind my house. It says "New 4" across the frame to the left of the toolbox. I think it is missing some parts, but not being very knowledgable about these things I don't know exactly what. The blade, gearbox, toolbox and lid, seat, wheels, and other major parts are there and in decent shape, but the pitman is rotted away. All I would like to know is what color scheme this would be painted in, how old is it, what were the dimensions of the pitman, where could I get parts for it, and where could I get closeups or diagrams of all the parts for one of these things. Also, what else could I tell ya that would help out with my questions. Thanks.

I checked out their prices. Too high for me. I can find origionals on e-bay for less.

Karl,

You willing to have around 2 MB sent to your e-mail box or do you want me to print it out and mail it to you.

Danny,

Sounds to me like you have a McCormick New 4 mower. The date on my New 4 ops and parts manual is 7-18-13 and in a McCormick parts manual I have for 1916 shows that the New 4 and New Big 4 was made from 1896 to 1915. After that it shows the #6 came onto the scene in 1914 and the Big 6 in 1915. If you like I can e-mail you a copy of my New 4 manual. (I have a scanned copy on my hard drive.) The size of the file is around 2MB.

The length of the pitman depends on what casting numbers that are on the metel straps on the end of the pitman. Please post the casting numbers that are on the straps when you can. This will help figure out the correct pitman for your machine. The length of the pitman will either be 35 1/4" long or 33 1/2" long.

There is a Amish buggy maker near me here in Wisconsin that makes blank pitman sticks. (I think he uses ash.) They don't have any holes drilled in them so you would be able to cut, drill, and rivit it yourself to fit your machine. You can write to him at:

Hope this helps,
