I pulled the magneto off the Wisconson TFD motor expecting to find a visible mark on the wheel when I was ready to replace the mag. Unfortunately there was abit of corrosion on wheel and I haven't been able to find a setting mark and get everything set to run. I can get a few backfires thru the carb but nothing to run. My mag has a dot on its gear wheel plus a X on one of the teeth that is visible thru the plug hole. Which cylinder is #1? Are there any timing marks to look for in other spots or do you set it staticlly wiith your thumb over the spark plug hole looking for TDC? Not being an electric start model any suggetions or references would be appreciated

Brian, I can make this real simple for you. Turn the motor so the keyway for the belt pulley is straight up on top. Eyeing it up will be close enough. Do not worry which cylinder is on top dead center. It doesn't matter unless you have had a special mag put on at sometime or other, but I doubt it. Next, take out the 3/8" pipe plug that is located right next the where the magneto is. Install the mag so the tooth of the magneto gear that has an x on it is in the center of this hole. You are now timed. It is that easy. The only wrinkle might be if your wires do not come out of the magneto distributor cap side by side. If they do, and I'm fairly certain they will be side by side, these simple instructions will time your motor. Any more trouble, please email me. I have made a living with these motors for the past 25 years. Steve

Thanks for the keyway info Steve.

I know the way the book gives works but your way is alot faster and simpler.

The number one cylinder is the cylinder towards the cooling fin end of the engine.

The number one wire is the socket closet to the block in the mag cover.

One of the aluminum cooling fins on the front end of the crankshaft it has a mark notched crossway into it facing outwards towards you as you look at it from the end.

The notched fin should be pointing straight upwards. for #1 to be TDC.

When you determine TDC #1 here's the mag info.

The wire socket nearest to the block side on the cap is #1 on the mag cap.

With the mag off the engine turn the mag clockwise with your hand til it snaps and fires thru the #1 socket.

When the mag fires thru the #1 socket hold the gear at that position and put the mag back on the engine being sure not to let the mag drive gear roam away from where it snapped for you as you mesh the gears.

When the mag is back on with the crankshaft fin notch upwards and the X visible in the hole you should be in time.

The proper timing is 27 degrees BTC so there is a chance you are in time already in the gears but out too far on the slide adjustment or points gap.

Someone may have put the punch mark on the mag gear but Wisc did'nt have them from the factory unless it is a much later model engine than what came on the 68 or 69.

If I am not clear enough or have missed something my email is [email protected].

I would be more than happy to email or fax a copy of the shop manual to you.
