I've came across a NH 472 Haybine conditioner. Is this a good machine? How old is it? Are there any known problems(major or otherwise)? A local dealer has it and says that a guy brought it in on a trade for a disk mower. It was being used regularly at the time of the trade. It's a bit rusty, actually a lot rusty, but appears to be in good mechanical shape. They only want $800. Is this a good deal? Thanks. Casey

C.C. I Barrow a friends 472 the second he is through with it , its a great machine. You will never want to cut hay with a sicle bar mower once you have used a haybine. Disk mowers are becomming the hot thing around here as well, but they are so expensive to mantain and take so much HP to run. Gary runs the 472 with a Ford 1710 with no trouble. I think NH recomends 27 hp for the 472. Look carefully at the rollers Wobble joint and the gearbox output shaft for wear. By the way that is a very good price for a working condition machine. Let us all know how you make out, good luck. Roy

472 shouldn't be any older than around 1979 or thereabouts. It should be pretty much the same machine as a 477 or 478 (previous 7' models). I think NH switched to the model 474 around 1990? $800 sounds low for this machine. Probably means the rubber is peeling off of the rollers. You're looking at about $1800 just for new rollers. Then you'll need new bearings on the roller shafts, you'll probably need new chains, a new knife, and just when you think you're finished, the wobble box will need to be (expensively) rebuilt. If the sheet metal is very rusty, expect cracks and holes to develop. Good 472 haybines in this area (by good I mean needing no major work other than new knives) go for $2500 to $5500, depending on how old.

Tim, Thanks for the info. I've glanced at the machine and the rollers and knife appear to be in good shape. The sheet metal is rusted bad, but no cracks or holes yet and there is still some paint left. The dealership that has it has always been good and honest with me(and everybody else I know). The only thing they warned me about was the bearings for the rollers. I think they've just not been able to sell it in the off season and now they just want to get rid of it. Disk mowers are also real popular in the area(east Kentucky), anything with a sickle seems to be real hard to sell. I'm going to give it a good going over tomorrow. If the rollers really are in good shape, I think I'm going to buy it. At that price I don't think I can pass it up. Again, thanks for the info. At least now I can ask a few more questions about it and not look like a complete idiot. Casey
