Have wood lot to clear and cannot burn the brush. Looking for a good used pto chipper with hydraulic feed, something on the order of a Bearcat 74554 or Valby 140 with hyd feed. I want hydraulic feed so I don't have to trim all the limbs down. Also, I don't need anything bigger than 4-5" because I can use the firewood. Any information or other options most helpful. Will be using 60 hp tractor.

A few month ago I purchased a used Valby 150 self feed pto chipper for $2000.00. The 150 model is not direct drive like the 140 model and there for is not quite so hard on the pto components. The unit has a 6 1/2 inch capacity and is well made. I run it off a 60hp JD tractor and it has done everything I have asked of it. I have so far cleared 5 of the 10 acres I had planned to clean up, and some of the wood exceeds the 6 1/2 inch capacity by a couple at least. I have not had a lot of problems with feeding, it will take a 30 foot tall birch about 7 inches at the base and in about 6 seconds the tree is history, vines however are a problem and dont feed well at all.
Good luck George Sr.

How big is the lot? It might be more economical to rent a chipper if you have something like a Nations Rent nearby. I think a 60hp Vermeer diesel goes for about $180 a day. It also has a self feed and reverser bar. ( In case you get caught on some branches being pulled in, it reverses the feed rollers ) If you rent a chipper, cut all your trees first and stack them in piles with the trunks in the same direction. It will save lots of time. Then go get a chipper and a couple of helpers and you can do a lot in a day.

The problem with buying a smaller unit (less than 12") is that most of the brush you want to chip is a lot wider than 5" or 6" with all the limbs sticking out all over. The power in feed won't get enough traction to break the side limbs off and jam them through! This is the reason i sold my PTO chipper with power feed, and now make brush piles for rabbits ect.. If you live where all the limbs you want to trim don't have a lot of side limbs none of this will matter to you, but i sure got sick of always haveing to cut every thing down just so i could chip it, so i sold the chipper!!
