I need to purchase a bushhog and am very interested in everyone's opinion.

I have 70 acres of which I will be mowing about 10-20 of it regularly. Mostly native Blue Stem and some areas with 1" to 2" elm and sweetgum saplings. I am thinking at least a medium duty.

I'm worried that more money doesn't always mean more quality and want to make the right choice.

You don't say how big a tractor you are cutting with. I won't center on a specific size for that reason, but will tell you that either a Bush Hog, or a Servis Rhino will serve you well. The 7' TW series Rhino for example sports a 110 HP gearbox protected with slipclutch. The medium duty Bush Hog is similar Both excellent machines.

Might I add something here?

"BUSH HOG" is a BRAND NAME, owned by a corporation of the same name. What you are talking about is ROTARY BRUSH CUTTERS.

Likewise, A "HAYBINE" is exclusively NEW HOLLANDS' brand of Mower Conditioners.

These products get refered to generically, like KLEENEX, JELLO, XEROX, BAND-AIDE which are also brands, and not the name of every facial tissue, fruit flavored gelatin dessert, copier machine, or adhesive bandage.

The owners of the trademarked brand name products tend to get upset if you use THEIR brand name when refering to someone elses' product.

Just thought I'd point this out.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've always referred to the "rotary brush cutter" as a "shredder." It goes right up my spine to hear someone call a shredder a "Bush hog." Also, those "haybines" you were talking about have always been called "swathers" by all I know. "Plowing" is pulling a moldboard, technically speaking I suppose. If you are pulling a tandem disc you are "disking." There is huge difference between a disc plow and a disc harrow also. An offset tandem disc plow and a one-way disc plow are two entirely different things although I hear some people refferring to offsets as "one-ways." Etcetera, etcetera.....

I mentioned this a couple times long ago, and recieved the same kind of responces you got here. Some people just don't want to learn anything, or can't stand being corrected?? Sometimes when a person comes here to get help with a rotary cutter, it would sure help if they would use the proper name instead of "bush hog, as that makes for some confusion as to what kind and brand they really have. Know a fellow in Grangeville, LA, has MF 231 tractor and a heavy duty bushhog brand bushhog, had it for two years barely has cut grass with it, heavy duty as it is built it will probably do for precommercial thinning of a forest.

When someone is seeking information we should direct them, not berate them for knowledge they may be lacking. Did you type your response on a 'PC', was it literally an 'IBM' product. When one brand name comes to represent a type of product or process it is a type of hommage reflecting the current or past dominance of that brand. I think Xerox has more fear of the day that someone would say "could you 'Canon' this document for me?" than they have wrath over the general use of the word 'Xerox' in place of photocopy or reproduce. This fellow was asking a question in common language, so a polite correction would have been in order. Had he placed an add to sell a 'FORD' bush hog or if he was manufacturing a rotary cutter bearing the words 'BUSH HOG' it would be a much more serious issue with possible legal consequences. Let's show a little patience.

OUCH, I TOTALLY AGREE. I THINK IT AN HONOR THAT WE REFER TO A CRESENT OR STILSON WRENCH, OR ANY OTHER BRAND NAME REFERING TO A TYPE WHICH THAT COMPANY MADE FAMOUS. THAT MIKE GUY IS PROBABLY THE SAME PERSON WHO GETS ONTO ME FOR TYPING IN CAPS. HE DOESN'T GET IT.

I have a Field General that I am very happy with, I bought it used at a dealer for 500 Canadian a few years ago. Before i got it I hired a guy who had a John Deere rotary cutter that he had paid 5000 for. While he worked for me it broke twice, finally he did not want to do any more work as he was spending more for repairs than what I was paying him.

Mike, a couple of comments you did not make are what size tractor you have and how much you want to spend. If you are only going to mow 10 to 20 acres at a time I would look at a 6 foot 3pt hitch cutter such as the Woods MD172 or the new Brush Bull mentioned in other posts. The weight of the well built 6ft cutters will run around 1000 pounds give or take a little. It takes a 50 hp tractor to safely handle this size cutter if you have to get on sloops or rough spots. When you go to the wider cutters multiple gearboxs and additional shafting are required which drives up the price. The jump from a 6' to a 8' cutter in a name brand may more than double the price. I purchased a new Woods MD172 about 8 years ago for about $1200, I would estimate the current price to be $1500 to $1700. A fellow has to prioritize his assets such as time, tractor size and funding to make the final decision. I does not matter how big it is if you can't pull it or afford it. It does not help if you can not perform the job in your available time. You have heard suggestions that range from around $1000 to $9000 in the end its your pick. Wish you Well!

And by the way, thanks for the comments...

Two years ago I got a 2615L Bush Hog brand (medium duty). Size depends on what else you have to do beside mow. For us I work full time off the farm and try to put up 10K square bales and 500 round so I can't waste any time mowing patures. It takes me a hard week to mow 200 acres of pasture. 1/2 of it is easy mowing and 1/2 is 30% slopes, rocks, stumps, and limbs. The 2615 is a GREAT mower, I would get another in a minute. Looked at Woods a lot but stump jumper wasn't standard and the base unit was $10K (paid $8800 for mine, new, less trade-in). Dealer is also a Rhino dealer and took my '91 Rhino 15' on trade (gave me $3800) and it was a POS, and had been since the day I got it. 85 hp pulls the Bush Hog easy and I needed 105 to not do as good a job with the Rhino. Have pulled it with 65 but I like to mow with the a/c in the bigger tractor. Makes my 65 hp run a little hot mowing very fast but doesn't take as much fuel per hour on the 85 as the disc mower does.

I'm about to replace my rotary cutter, so i've been looking at new ones too. I had a bush hog before the (2) Woods i have now. I've all so had other brands in years past too. My Woods cutters have held up the best, and the new Woods Brush Bull looks like the one to buy. It's sold in light, med. or HD, in (3) widths. The medium duty model has a 115 hp gear box, and it's the one i'm buying!! It's designed so the rain water will run off it too, and as mine lives out doors, that's important to me. The Bush Hog i had didn't hold up like the Woods i have now, and a new Brush Bull is cheaper to buy than a new Bush Hog of equal HP rateing and size. Lastly, i wouldn't ever buy a rotary with out a slip clutch either. Robert

My last rotary cutter, a Brillion 5'shredder, lasted 43 years with some really heavy duty use. It's deck is starting to rust through so I bought a Woods Brush Bull 6000 last fall to replace it. Costs $2,400. It's really heavy duty!

Well I work at a farm dealer in the summer and they sell 3 different brands, so I not trying to tell you what to buy, just the ones I know the most about. King Kutter does make a heavy duty bushhog, but the gear box is not a heavy duty as some other name brands, but the rest of the bushhog is plenty strong. Land Pride makes some very nice units, 3 different ranges, from standard, to heavy duty, to extra heavy duty. Generally, the standard is fine, it is better built than others compared to their standard duty. Woods sells light and heavy as well, and they are also somewhat pricy. They do however have a model that is in-between the Land Pride standard and heavy, and heavy and extra-heavy duty. All will work well is operated with some care, and all will last if cleaned off reguarly-if you leave the grass piled up on top, it will get wet and rust the deck. The only problem I have seen with the land pride is on the smaller 3 pt. hitch ones, they tend to throw some grass forward, and when on say a ford 8n, they have caught I know of one tractor on fire from the grass accumulating on the exhaust pipe underneath. they do make chain and rubber gaurds that prevent this. On the farm we have a Howse, and it is okay, no real negatives, but it don't set the world on fire either. We have king kutter that I bought for a deal, but it was a light duty and I will never buy one again, just because of my bad experience with that one, but you will be okay with a heavy duty king. Also have an old woods 3pt. ditch bank mower that is beat up bad but is still cutting like the day it was new(I guess, that was almost 30 years ago, before my time). Anyhow, check out the websites for exact info, including weight of the rotary kutters, can be a concern if you are gonna go 3 pt. Anyhow, hope this helps, email me if you have any questions.

Also, I would go with a slip-clutch and not a shear pin(bolt). It is more expensive, but definitly worth it in my opinion, others may disagree though. It is easier on the gear box and easier on you so you don't shear a bolt sunday morning and have to wait til monday to get the right one size from the dealer....

Given that you are going to clear timber with the saplings and level ground (at least that is what happens to me when I bush hog a field for the first time, I would look around and find one that is on its last legs and use it until it falls apart. Hopefully it will have held together long enough to clear the trees. This is what I did and I still have that old Hardee bush hog. Gave $50 for it and tacked another $15 worth of scrap sheet metal on it. When I am hogging somewhere I have not been and I am questioning how smooth it is, it goes and my nice 6 ft one stays at home.

"The sweetness of cheap prices is forgotton sooner than the bitterness of poor quality". seriously, i bought a 5ft. bushhog brand cutter about 10 years ago and it is still in very good shape. i use mine to cut a 6 acre hay field about 2-3 times a year and around the home place to clean up my 2 acres. not a bit of trouble from it and no rust through on the deck either.there are cheaper brands out there, but i would rather pay a little more and get a name brand and parts for it locally than hassle with ordering parts from a off brand.

"Bush Hog" is a brand, and one of the better known ones. Technically, they're "rotary mowers", but lots of folks use 'bush hog' or 'brush hog' as a generic name for them. In the South and West, I believe they're called 'shredders'.

Personally, I've got a Woods, and have been well pleased with it.

Skip the ones labelled "Light Duty" no matter what brand they are, unless you're only mowing grass with it.

Here in Wisconsin "Brush Hog" is the Cadillac of rotary mowers. You can also get a John Deere mower but you know you pay $10 per paint stroke more just to buy it and it's not good just because the color is JD green. Other brands aren't as common. We do see a few from the local farm and fleet.
