Weld main shaft?

I have an 84" Servis Rhino rotary mower. The main shaft coming out of the gear box that goes to the pto on the tractor has split right where the key way is located. I went to my dealer to get a new shaft and he said it would cost me close to $400. I can't believe this shaft that is only about a foot long could cost so much. My question is can this shaft be welded? Does anyone know where I might locate a new shaft as I think this dealer was trying to put the shaft to me.

When you say split - what do you mean? I had a similar situation w/ a John Deere Rotary - the key way ripped out. The machinist "filled" in the old key way, then cut a new key way on the opposite side of the shaft; worked fine.

It's probably both hardened and has a certain degree of 'spring' to it to keep it from snapping off. The basic metal alloy used, and the treating to make it survive ain't cheap. I got a similar price on the shaft on my rototiller, and though they were nuts too, until I went to a machine shop and got an estimate on having one made.

A machine shop welder that knows his metallurgy could probably produce a suitable weld that would get some more life out of it.
