I am considering buying a New Holland 268 Baler.
Please share any information you have regarding this machine. Is this a good model and what would you check out to be sure its a good machine other than a field test? What is a reasonable price to pay for an average square baler. Also will this machine do a good job baling pine straw?

John; I have used a 268 for 5-6 years now and have had very good luck with it. It makes straight, square bales and seldom misses. I think I payed $650 for mine and it was ready to bale. I picked up a second 2 years ago for parts, but havn't had to use much more than a hay dog spring from it. Good advice from Burr, watch out for rusted pickup and bale chambers. Good luck. Roy

We have a 269, which is nearly the same as a 268. We also really like it! I hasn't missed many ties and it makes nice bales. We paid $650 for it and got about 15 free teeth for the pick-up. I think you would be very happy with this machine.

Also NH made different pickups for this machine- one was reagular with on four bars and teeth were spaced 4 and 1/2" apart(It is something like that) and the other pick-up is called a "Super sweep" pickup. It has 6 bars and the teeth are space somewhere around 2 and 5/8" apart. For pine straw I would try to buy one with the Super Sweep pickup- this was on ours and it would help you ALOT!!!!

If it aint wore out it's a dang good baler. Parts and manuals are still readily available from NH.

Pine straw is kinda like baling rice straw and it does a very good job as long as you get the windrow heavy enough.

Check the plunger for slack around the sides of the plunger. You can adjust the excess out.

Check the knotters and bill hooks for excess wear and slack. It takes new parts to get the slack out of them.

Trip the baler and spin it over a round or 2 by hand to check the timing and for hard spots. With no hay in it the baler should turn over and go thru the tying motions with just hand pressure.

Around here in SE Texas the baler would sell for from $250 to $750 depending on the condition and appearance.
