I am near positive I have a JD 953 Running Gear. The only thing is that I cannot tell whether it is a 953 or a 963. How do I tell? How are the rear axles connected on both the 963 and 953? Did they make a specific hopper to hold corn on those old wagons? Thanks for the help.

Ralph got it right. We bought both a 953 and a 963 in the very early 50,s still have the 963 under a bale throw rack. A good running gear altho too low and too narrow compared to todays wagons. JiM G.

Clayton, There was very little difference between the two. I don't think either had spoke wheels. I have a farmers pocket ledger from J D and it states the 963 is a little heaver than the 953. There was also a lighter 943. The 963 came with a heaver tongue, instead of a 3" channel it has a iron on the bottom to form a box. The reach braces were attached to the axle different to increase strength.
I know my dad bought a 953 in 1946 and that wasn't the first ones. I bought one in 1963 and I think they were made after that. The number was on the back reach brace.

I can't help you on the ID but I am curious about what your gears look like. I have two JD wagons but have no idea what models they are. Both have 6.00-16 tires on round spokes. One has a box bed on it and the other one is a bit wider that looks like it should have a hay rack on it. Does yours look like that and would it have been made in the 30's or 40's?
