Some things that figure into the value is how complete it is and how long of a sickle bar it has. The longer the bar, the higher the value.

I picked up a #7 that is 95% complete with a 6 foot bar for $75 a few months back and in my area that is a deal because of the Amish in my area. They favor the enclosed gear system of the #7, #9 and the JD Big 4 with a 6 foot bar. If it would of been sold at a auction I figure it would of gone for at least $200 or better.

I feel that Mr. Healey is correct in his figure of what the average price is for most enclosed gear 4 and 5 foot sickle bar mowers but as I stated earlier the ones with the 6 foot bar bring quite a bit more if they are in working condition.

If you are thinking of restoring it feel free to drop me a line. I know of a source that is able to get most of the parts. If you are thinking of selling it, drop me a line also. I'm always looking for more "toys" for my collection.

Hope this helps,

Old Iron

Houndman. Obviously the value is dependant on location. Here in Maine what I stated is accurate even for a 6-foot. I have three McCormick Deering Big 6 mowers, a McCormick-Deering No.9 and a John Deere No 3. I The most I paid was $100 for one of the Big 6"s which in hindsight was too much. I went to an auction recently where there were about 20 McCormick-Deering No6 thru No.9 mowers some with rubber tires. Only one sold ( primarily lack of interest) for $40 . The buyer took the wheels and left the rest. John

John,

True, the value does depend where a person is located. I'm in a area of Wisconsin where there is a heavy population of Amish so the prices on equipment is always a bit higher.

I gave $175 for a McCormick-Deering #6 that was in working condition and had new paint. With another $50 or so I was able to restore it back to origional condition.

The lowest I have given for a mower was $50 and that was for a McCormick-Deering #7 for parts. The highest has been for a Sears David Bradley on rubber and that was $300. A bit high even by my standards but it made a nice addition to my collection of mowers. It doesn't cut hay worth a dang but it does get a few looks at shows along with my Milwaukee #2 single horse chain drive.

Do you know if those mowers you seen at that auction are still there? If equipment is selling for them prices out in your area it may be worth my time to head out that way and deal on them.

I just got my hands on a #7 mower. It is missing some parts including the pitman. Is there anyone with some pic. they could send me so I can see where everything goes. I would like to restore it. Thank you Fred

I'm not sure but I would think they are. I don't grt down that way on a regular basis but I could check next time i'm in the area. There was a guy not too far from me that was going around buying up the old mowing machines and sending them by the truckload to somewhere around Lancaster PA. John

John,

That makes sence to me because of the Amish in that area. At least they are being put back to use and not being used to hold up a mailbox.

Don't go out of your way to get back to the area where the auction was. If you do, you do and if you don't, you don't. It's getting to a point that when I bring a new "boat anchor" (that's what my other half calls them) home the charge card gets a good work-out. :-)

Have fun with your boat anchors,

Old Iron
