My stepfather had one sometime in the fifties. It was a manual baler where you set blocks and pushed the wire through by hand(if I remember the story right). I believe it was also fed with a pitchfork rather than having a pickupreel. I have seen a few of them around in fencerows over the years. The manual ones were nicknamed "woodpecker balers". The one he had was driven by an old Wisconson engine and had a large flywheel on the side. There was one story of when the flywheel came off while baling on bottom land near the river and rolled for close to a quarterof a mile.

My grandfather had one on a farm he managed in Mass. Used it till the early 70's that I can remember. Had a sweep feed, as you said, gray color, can't remember much else..... ...

My grandfather has one that we used up until he quit baling hay about ten years ago. It is just sitting in the barn now. It was driven by a tractor PTO, and it did have the sweep feeder like you describe. It worked well for us for many years, you just had to be careful not to run it too fast, if the sweep got to moving too fast, it would break the link arm that drove it.
