Hello all,
Some one gave me a manure spreader maybe a IH
but not sure. The paddles and tines rotate fine but the convayor does not advance. An I correct that it is kind of racheted back?there is a fine cog on the convayor axel and it has one dog on the top to stop it from sliding the wrong way I think there should be one on the bottom to catch the cog and make it advance the manure out.Am i corrcet or does it work some other way. Bill

This is for a John Deere Model H, but I suspect other spreaders use a similar system.

In this photo, 8A is a two-lobed cam pinned to the axle on a ground drive spreader. 8B is an optional 3-lobed cam if you want faster conveyor speeds.

In Photo 2 (see link) parts 3 thru 7 are a ratchet assembly. Part 27 is a very strong spring that forces the gearcase of the ratchet assembly to follow the cam. Pawl 10 keeps the rachet from freewheeling when it's resetting, pawl 7 locks the gear which is pinned to the conveyor shaft (at right of picture) and turns it as the ratchet gearcase rides up the cam on the axle. A lever on the front of the spreader adjusts the position of the ratchet gearcase relative to the cam on the axle, and determines how many teeth the drive pawl (#7) moves during each reset cycle, and thereby, how much the conveyor chain moves for each lobe of the cam.
