Don't know how you will harvest your crop so I will say this for the information. Years ago Dad planted the pumpkins along with the corn. sorta like getting double use of the acerage as both crops were ready to harvest at the same time. Used a two row horse drawn planter and mixed the seed. The corn yield was about the same if planted wth pumpkins or corn only. The harvest was by hand either shuck the corn off stalk and pick up pumpkins or hand cut the stalk and shuck later and pick up pumpkins. If i were hand picking sweet corn and wanted pumpkins I would do the same today. Sounds like you have all the right equipment. Hey good luck

Hi Buck,
That's interesting about the pumpkins with corn. I don't plant pumpkins so haven't tried your dad's method. I did do something different year before last that was similar.
My friend owns the planter and he had the seed corn (silver queen then)that he had saved from the crop the year before. Mixed in with the corn was only a few seed of late harvest beans. I have no idea of the variety. In a two acre corn patch, I guess that we planted no more than a double handful of the beans. When the corn matured in early summer, I picked it by hand and the beans were maybe a foot tall-just beginning to latch onto the corn stalks. I just forgot about the patch after the corn was picked, but about mid October I noticed a lot of something growing there. Went down and took a look-it surprised me. The dog-gone place looked like Kudzu had taken over. It was the beans. We picked beans until we quit. The deer ate all they wanted. I never saw anything like it and don't know what kind of beans they were. Looked like pole beans and tasted like field peas. Good luck.

Hi Brett,
Sounds like you got about everything you need. I have a garden approx 4 acres and have less equipment than you. I do a lot of the work by hand, weeding, fertilizing, picking, etc.
Since you have been working for a farmer, you already know more than most of us. I don't know what part of the country you are in and this certainly makes a difference. Check out your state agricultural co-op. extention service. In AL we can get a world of info from them on the computer.
I don't plant pumpkins, but raise sweet corn every year. Most folks plant Silver Queen, but last year I tried a variety called "Bi-color" as the kernels were both red and white. Not sure if this is the real name. This was the best sweet corn I have ever eaten. I will never plant Silver Queen again. Try it, I think you will like it. Good luck.

Hey PCC-AL, where would be a good place to start looking for a decent price on sweet corn seed prices? I'd like to plant a couple of acres of sweet corn next year but the seed catalog prices are high if I plant more than a couple of row's and considering it's for friends and family and the wild animals who hit the feild and not for sales I'd like to find seed's thats affordable.
Thanks in advance

Hi Bob,
I usually get my seed at the local farm store, but my friend gave me the Bi-color that we planted last year. Our stores sell seed in small quantities for gardens, as well, as large amounts for the big farmers. The seed you need to plant a couple of acres shouldn't be but a few dollars. Generally, seed is cheap and fertilizer is expensive. If you don't have a store close by, see if you can get a few seed from a local farmer. Good luck.
