I have just bought a JD 1207 after getting information here a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be in good shape but has not been used in many years. It has been stored in a shed and covered with a tarp. Thanks for the information received. I will get a manual for it as soon as I get it home and start going over it.

jerry i have talked with you before i think about the ford balers, i never got around to writing on your other post but i will now. since you have already bought the machine my opinion will not matter much. but about 2 years ago i got a REAL good deal or so i thought....i only gave $50 for the jd 1207 and a side delivery rake....went and got the mower but never picked up the rake..i used the mower 2 times and the top roller bearing went out i replaced and used it almost all season and went to use it last year and after 2 rounds i heard this most god awful squal.....it was the same bearing so after replacing i decided to park the mower in the fence row....looks a little rough but what do looks mean??? mine is missing the shield over the gearbix and the rear windrower guards have been welded up a time or two. the rollers have no rubber what so ever which i guess it the reason for it not takeing the hay on through instead it flipped it up pver the reel doen all the adjusting i could and never got it right. when we got it we replaced the sections and got a diffrent bar for it too...my friend had a 1209 for a year or two then traded up to a 1219 which is the same thing he ssaid it was no less of a piece of junk then the 1209 was withen a few months of use the rubber on the rollers started comeing off so he traded it for a new holland 12' mower and has never regreated it since... jerry i hope you have better luck with your 1207 then i did but i found out which i personally think is teh best mower now and that is the 990 ih haybine i have 2 a 7' and a 9' i can keep right up with my helper, and he has a 100hp tractor and jd 260 diskmower that is about 10 years newer then my 990's. Personally jerry i think you shoulda waited and seen if you could fine a 990 you wouldnt be sorry with one of those machines....dont get me wrong im a jd man through and through but i will NEVER go back to jd mowers..i didnt write this to scare you i was mainly trying to show what to looks for as in trouble you might incounter. john.
P.S:
i am planing on putting the 1207 up for sell here in a few days for around 100 to $150....

I have waited and waited for years. Been mowing with a 501 sicklebar for years and found this one for $400. It does not look worn out but then again I have not hooked it up. I won't be cutting 50 acres a year with it so I probably won't wear it out if it mows. The lady had wanted $800 for it but I had offered her $400 and told her to give me a call if she wanted to sell it for that. Got the call a couple of days ago. I had told her that $400 was all that I had to gamble and that was what it would be. The rollers on this one are there and still pliable but do have some small 1/2 inch cracks but only way to know if they are going to fly apart is to hook it up and start mowing.

Probably not worth it without the rollers on it. They don't like being outside all year, and are the expensive part of the machine. Not sure what you expected for $50.....

I like my 1209, works fine for 2 years now, was in better shape than yours to start with! Only thing with mine is I pick up way too many rocks with it, go through a lot of sections & guards, not sure what I'm doing wrong on that.

Paul, I did not realize that you had the 1209. I will be pulling mine probably with the Ford 2000 and I understand that is enough horse power. Are you pulling yours with the 961? One of the complaints I have heard about the 120X series is that you have to mow slow. I am wondering if that is less than a regular sickle bar or equal to. I know you have used both so what is your opinion.

I have pulled it with the 960, but 9' is a load for it, & my pto cluch is starting to go. So mostly I use the Ford 7700 - 85 hp.

I would say the cutting speed is about the same, both depend on the sickle to do the cutting. The 1209 plugs up a lot less than a sickle bar, so that is faster - however, when the 1209 plugs, it takes longer to clean it out - so back to about the same.

I certainly have better alfalfa in the barn after buying the 1209, but I use the sickle bar a lot for uneven ground by the road & drainage ditches, and misc cutting.

Paul, I have a 1209, and don't have much trouble with it, rocks or otherwise. We always ran the sickle mower with the points up a little so it'd slide up over rocks. I can't remember for sure, but there may be a way to change the cutterbar angle on the 1209. I'll have to get the tech manual out (how 'bout that, when I bought it, I got an owner's manual, a parts manual, AND a tech manual from previous owner). Another thought: Maybe the springs are set too tight and the head isn't floating? How's the wear on the skid plates?

I bought an operators manual for mine, but it's a little thin on specifics. Mine is the older style with 2 lift cylinders. When I brought it home it seemed to lift pretty high, now it doesn't seem to lift very high at all, esp the right (far) side. I suppose oil passing by, or are these the fabled phased cylinders? I don't know much about hydraulics...

Tim, You got the Tech Manual. How good is it. I am an idiot about having the manual for everything I own so that will be one of the first purchases I make but I was wondering about the Tech manual.

John, Two things, first Paul is a fine fellow. Went out of his way to help me a couple of times and I can not thank him enough. Second, this mower has the type hitch were you bolt a piece on to the tractor drawbar that has a pin sticking up and the mower lowers a ball type hitch down on it. They are having a hard time finding the part that bolts to the tractor and I was wondering if you might want to part with yours if available.

I saw a very similar hitch on a older style Case (or Case-International?) round baler one time. If you can't find a green one, you might want to check out the red place just for kicks. No idea if it would be the same dimensions, but a thought.

Also some salvage yards specialize in hay equipment, eventually something would turn up?

jerry, i have never talked to paul but from what i read he seems to be a fine fellow. on the 1207 when i bought mine it came with a BUNCH of parts i still have them but never went through them if you would like i could go out to the farm tomorrow and look? i wasnt trying to make you think twice about buying it. whne mine mowed it mowed great but was kinda slow. but i guess with something 20-25 years old you bout have to mow slow. i thought about fixing mine up(new shields paint decals etc) and then selling it. im sure the 1207 will do you perfect for what you where useing. you shouldnt have a problem over powering it thats for sure!!! matter of fact theres a 1209 up at the dealer in town i was looking pretty heavy at. it looks new one owner and has only mowed around 20 acers a year and for the past 5 or 6 years has been setting in a barn. the reel hardly has the piant wore off of it! i dont really need another mower but this one looked good and im a sucker for prices like this one(dealer wants 1000) i have contacted the guy and the only thing he said it needed was probly new gear lub and sections. i have been looking at it for about 3 weeks now and cant decide weather i need it or not. but getting another mower leads to another thing..... A TRACTOR!!! so if i can just talk her into it and convince her it WILL increase capacity i may own this machine in a few days... ill try and keep yall posted.
