When they used to make binders the binder was always pulled on the left side of the tractor. However, when swathers started to appear they were pulled on the right side of the tractor, and still are. Does anyone know why the switch was made?

Because the lead horse is hitched on the left side.

TRACTOR LIFT CONTROLLS ON RIGHT AND PULLING ON ROADS YOU CAN LOOK TO RIGHT AT MAIL BOXES AND SIGNS TO KEEP FROM HITTING THEM.

Most large pull combines were right handed, so the swather had to be the same so that the heads of the grain lay in the same direction for the combine to pick up. All-Crops and JD 12A family are left handed so that the old binders they were replacing could be converted into swathers if needed.

all heads need to be picked up first is true but that can be done with either a right or left hand swather\converted binder. It's just a matter of clockwise or counter clockwise around the field. r.

I was told to always turn right while using any equipment with a rotating pto shaft,I have noticed when you do turn left you do get a knock with some eqipment, and thats why they are set up that way. 40 years ago I kept having to replace the u-joints in a pull type bushog and the guy that helped me told me this . --pappy

I used to run a Hesston Hydroswing for a friend which could be switched to either side. Because of the hydraulic levers being on the right side of the seat, it was handier to pull it on the right side. Otherwise you were looking one way, left, and trying to move levers behind you. It was much easier to run it on the right side. I don't know how combines and corn pickers and then swathers ended up on the right. Maybe a right handed engineer.

Wondered that myself. Only thing I ever came up with was improved safety when pulling implement on the road.

Thanks to everyone for the information. When I ask older farmers locally they all say that it was to make road travel better also (machine is hanging over ditch rather than road), but I have a hard time believing that was a big concern back in the days of binders are early days of swathers.

When i started farming John Deere and Allis Chalmers pulltype combimes cut from the leftof the opertor and one other make, i believe IHC, made one to cut on the right. It was much easier to cut stubble because we were running in opposite direcrion with the mower and had less to drag or clog

The horses either pushing or pulling has nothing to do with whether it is left or right hand cut!
