I just bought a 953 John Deere gears with a John Deere Barge Box. I haven't been around one of these and wanting to know a little more about them. Can you fellows tell me the story behind these, and maybe furnish a photo or two so I know if this is in original condition yet? Its got a hoist installed under it thats another brand. Thanks for any information!

Barge boxes seemed like to me that they were very popular in Illinois, Iowa and the western corn states. Here in EC IN, I have only saw one. With a hoist, they were good for picking ear corn or small grain, backing up to a corn drag and elevator, opening the back gate and raisin'her up. I would like to find one to pull behind a 227 picker or my restored NI pull-type. The transition here was from flatbeds w/ sideboards right to hopper wagons (100-150 bu.)

I have a 953 gear, currantly under a haywagon. The OM for one of these is OM-D11-948. My copy has 11/4/48 written on the front cover, which should help "date" this equipment.

There was a "943" and also a "963" gear, which were, respectively, the lighter duty and the heavy duty versions.

The "953" usually came with automotive tires, which enabled it to carry "maximum" loads at "high speeds", (according to the manual).

These wagons could be equiped with brakes. A leaf spring suspension was also available.

My wagon has 6 bolt, 6x15 rims, with 235R15 tires, at present.

Decals are available for the 953 from K&K.

Other options include a "horse pole" for use with draft horses.

I hope this helps.

Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim, I've been around the 953 gears most of my life. Just haven't been around any John Deere Barge Boxes. Sure would like to get some info on them. Thanks again!
