Considering a Oliver 620 baler. Would appreciate any pro's, con's and any other info (age size, parts, etc.) about this machine; Oliver Model 620, Serial #39236 BG.

Thanks in advance.

It might be a good machine but I would make very sure that parts could be gotten for it.

The trouble with a lot of stuff that isn't JD, NH or IHC (guess that's still NH these days) is that you just can't get parts for it any more, short of buying another one or two of the same thing.

I once was at an auction where an older Oliver twine baler was on sale. I don't think too many people even bothered to look at it.

We used an Oliver 620 on our farm for many years, from about 1968 until 1981. Bought it used from an Oliver dealer for $800.00. Normally we baled 10,000 bales per year,no thrower which was the only reason it was traded. No help that summer, wife was pregnant, baler was older and I figured to update to a new baler with thrower. The 620 was traded in on a Hesston 4500 this is exactly the same baler just beefed up more in the frame and has more capacity. I wouldn't be afraid of this baler for parts since many are interchaneable with the Hesston.By the way I still have the Hesston 4500 no problem with parts for it. Good luck Mark Wis.

I didn't know about the Oliver/Hesston connection. Did Hesston ever make a square baler for Ford? I thought someone mentioned that once . . . . I take it the 4500 was the model before the 4600 centerline appeared? Know anything about the knotters and knotter drives on the centerline balers? Considering trading in two JD 336s with ejectors in on an almost new Hesston 8570 with a thrower. Need more capacity but have to watch my road transport width. Centerline looks good from that standpoint.

At the time I purchased my 4500 I also looked at the centerline baler made by Hesston, I think it was a 4550 not a 4600. In fact the reason I even considered Hesston was because of that design. Finally decided that centerline was rather new on the market at that time,1981, so I decided to stay with the 4500 which was exactly the same as the Oliver 520,620,and 720 design.I would assume that things like drive train and especially knotters would be the same on the centerline as oppossed to an offset style, I still have never used a centerline baler but have a friend that owned one for a short time, didn't like it and traded for a NH. Also I wonder if anyone can tell me if Hesston makes balers for Case/Ih.

CaseIH is no longer selling balers under its own name because of the recent merger with New Holland. But, Hesston did make the CaseIH centerline units. The Hesston 4570 is the same as the CaseIH 8530 according to our dealer.

tim,
cnh had to divest in the hesston for the fed trade commision. there is a new line of case ih balers now that are made in the penn. plant and painted red with the caseih logo. check them out on the case ih web page. they are New Holland painted red with a black pickup.

I owned an Oliver520 baler. It was the next smaller model than the 620. It was a good machine. I believe this series of baler would have been built from early 1960's on, not sure when production ceased. I would check with an agco dealer, preferably one that had been an Oliver/White dealer as to parts availability. That would be the only down side if the machine youre considering is in good shape.

Oliver balers disappeared around 1974 when White consolidated its farm equipment divisions. Parts? I don't know. AGCO has a lot of Oliver parts, but the balers weren't the most popular of Oliver's line, so you might have a problem there. I've only ever seen one Oliver baler sold in this area. It was in working order, shed kept, and went for $10. It may have been a 62T.
