Hi Scott,
I bought my first corn picker this year. It is a one row New Idea 323 and is about 25 years old.
Plans are to pick about 5-7 acres each year or less. NI is one of the best per recommendations from friends.

how many acres what kind of bushels per acre do you expect does your tractor go slow enough how much horsepower all things to consider a one row can be just the ticket if not too many acres chains bearings are available for parts

The New Idea 323 is the way to go. I ran mine today behind my '01 John Deere 4300. Mounted corn pickers are nice if you have the time to put them on, like a John Deere 227.

yeh if you can go afford a n,i, 323 go for it. the wood bros were also real popular but will shell more corn than the ni 323. also most didnt have fan to blow trash out of husking bed. and ditto on the safety warnings

Like the others said, NI seemed to be pretty popular back when more people did that. I would make sure of where I could get parts first.

Up in Wis it sometimes seemed like those things should have been called corn, finger and arm pickers. If you get one, damn sure shut the thing down before you unplug, debug or adjust the thing.

Tim is on track with the New Idea , They made a real good picker . I would look around and try to find one , parts are out there and there a hook up and pick corn machine . Wont be spending your time working on it !!!

You can get a good New Idea 323 for $1500 or less. Parts still available, and it can snap and husk 180 bu. corn, unlike most of the older pickers.

If you don't want something that new, New Idea #10 pickers seem to be the most numerous in the 1960 and before category, at least in my area. Therefore, it would be easier to find used parts if needed. There also seems to be quite a few Oliver #5 and #6 pickers around here, although I've never run either one and don't know much about them.

Never stick anything into a corn picker while it is running. A picker can remove or badly mangle a hand, arm, foot or leg in a second.

I have used Oliver #5 and #6 pickers. The #5 has an 8 roll husking bed, the #6 only has 4 rolls and its' capacity is marginal with decent corn. The #6 also is a real pig in a muddy field. The #5 is a very good picker and easier to maintain. I also like the old Wood Bros. Dearborn pickers we have had. They're so simple that they look like they are missing parts when compared to other pickers, but they pick very well and have light draft. They are a little short on capacity in modern hybrids, but you learn not to rush them. Sorry so windy, HTH, Karl.
