Does anyone know what kind of rubber tires were originally put on old plows, sickle mowers, etc? I'm refering to the tread pattern. It's always been a mystery to me why you can still find tractors around with original tires but you only find old implements with old style used car tires. Surely the tread didn't wear off that fast with a plow being used once a year. Is it possible they were shipped from the factory without tires?

Also as suggested, a lot of the old equipment came shipped without tires. My dad worked for the JD dealer here for years, when they put the equipment together they went to a tire store and got used tires or whatever the customer wanted. Later the stuff came with new tires. As also said I think more tires rotted off of equipment than wore off, probably more apt to be parked outside than tractors also.

The few promotional factory photo's I've seen of John Deere model 44 plows shows the wagon ribbed tire. Old ground driven implements like spreaders and rakes had the inter laced bar tire. I know my grand dads tires rotted off before they ever got used enough to wear off. Alot of this euipment was stored outside their whole life.

Right,
most of that equiptment wasn't taken care of like tractors were. Plus the rubber of that time wasn't as good as the rubber of later years.
