Pull behind or 3 pt plow?

I have a Farmall M that I plan on plowing 3-5 acres with. I'm not sure whether to 1. install a 3 point conversion hitch and 3 bottom plow or 2. buy a pull behind 3 bottom plow (prefer a hydraulic rather than manual lifted plow)? Any suggestions on which option would make easier plowing?

I'd have to say pull type from what you describe.

We had a neighbor when I was a kid who used an H with I guess a two bottom pull type and rope trip lift and he got along just fine.

Like the others said, that's what your M was made to do, and I imagine if the plow is in any kind of shape, she'll do it well.

George, For a three point hitch plow to work like it was designed you must have draft control on the hitch and none of the conversions have it. Buy a pull type, like others stated they are easier to set up properly, easier to hitch up and cheaper to buy. Hydraulic lift is the only way to go if you have that choice, but buy a trip rope lift plow before you go the 3 point route, seen it tried, aint no good.

Butch is right, no draft control=no plow control unless you are on perfectly level ground. Go with the drag type, that is what your tractor was designed for. With only 3-5 acres a 2 bottom drag would be good.

I, for myself, would try to find a IH "Little Genius #8 with 3-14" bottoms and coulters for a first choice, second choice would be a John Deere #55 ABH equipped the same way, third choice would be an Oliver, equipped the same and with Raydex bottoms. Try to get the hydraulic version of course, and check around for the best one you can get, putting price as the second priority. Having and learning to use the plow that was usually used with your tractor in it's "Hayday, or is it Heyday" is very satisfying. It's a true "vintage outfit" and you'll be doing the job just like the ol' boys did in their day-see what I mean?

I picked up an old IH P&O 2-12 trailer for 8 bucks(Can.) and after a new set of points and some expert advice from a guy who used one, got it to work well. Not too handy for finishing with a trailer wheel as it'll turn the way you don't want to go when backing up but you're hard pressed to find an easier plough to set up and work with. Good luck.

Davidj, Where did you find new points?I have an IH #8 and a"Wonder" that both could use new points.

I got the points at a Case-IH dealership in Winchester Ont. south of Ottawa. These were the "Ace #8" points and at the time were $22 Can. each. I've since heard that the price has gone up to $48. Also there are 2 types, cast Iron which wears better but more brittle , and steel which is stronger but wont break as easily. This can result in bending the bottom of the frame though. The points are triangular in shape. Good luck.

I have both a fast hitch and a trailer plow for my 350. You've gotten good advice from F14 and RAW and I would only add that a trailer plow is generally easier to plow straight with. With only 3-5 acres it probably doesn't make a lot of difference but unless you have other uses for the 3pt, you could spend $500-$800 for it, then add a plow at maybe $200-$300, and you have real money tied up in it. A decent trailer plow around here goes for anywhere from $100-$300 so it would be much less expensive to go that route.

I suspect you'll find that the pull-type is also easier to set up so it plows properly.

The pull behind would be the most economical first cost, Of coures if you have other uses for a 3-pont, the mounted plow is handier in small places.

Get a trailer plow,I dont know if an add on 3pt works that great on a plow. We pulled a MH 3-14 plow with a super M.

Good luck and be careful
